OUR READERS WRITE Need candidates for municipal office Dear Mr Editor With your cooperation I would like to register an appeal to the alliens of Acton to give serious consideration to our upcoming municipal elections should be the most Important year in relativeto expansion and growth of social and public works programs The unprecedented growth In our assessment of accompanied by Income from land sales should be in excess of and provided the existing council does not Incur too high a deficit finally enable our 1973 municipal council to possibly lower or hold the tax rate and also provide Improvements to any needed municipal services I am concerned about the apathy being encouraged by those in our community who are suggesting that will only be a year for marking tune prior to the mentation of regional government Our town must be strong to reap the benefits of and the council will have this as one of their main objectives I would therefore strongly urge any person who feels they can contribute to the administration of Acton next year to declare themselves as a candidate for any of the nine offices being contested Any person who can think objectively and who has a sincere social conscience resulting in a desire to improve and administer com munity services has ample qualifications to meet the responsibility Equally important is the individual responsibility of all of us to become informed and then to register a vote on December Don t let the oversaturation of the federal ejection campaign dampen our enthusiasm tor this vital reappralsal of our local administration I sincerely nope the Chamber of Commerce will continue their fine tradition of sponsoring a Candidates Night to ensure that all interested voters may have the opportunity to become better Informed Yours very truly The Acton Free Press Wednesday November 11972 Ballinafad Halloween anniversary STAN ROBERTSON and Mrs Horace were busy addressing 1072 Christmas seats for the Halton County TB and Sir Some time ago the Acton Free Press carried an article enquiring reasons for the slow growth of the town The article invited readers to offer suggestions and many of us hoped this would cause a profitable discus sion in the columns of the paper Myster lously nothing further appears It does appear without any reference to Individuals the council might give serious thought to aspects of the town life that could show improvement Did you ever try to drive along Mill Street In certain hours of the day not on Mondays and find large vehicles parked on either side of the road with a Gray Coach lines bus trying to get through what is then single line traffic Such congestion cannot bring joy to the hearts of the merchants for the long line of parked cars effectively prevents further parking Whydowenothaveabyassroad Such serious congestion Is the bane of travellers going through who always remember a town by its amenities Yours sincerely G A ACTON Municipal ACTIVITIES Let s talk about HORSES with Jennifer Ban All this talk about wild stallions lately has reminded me of one of the most exciting events ever to happen to me our visit to the stallions of Austria when they toured the North American continent Now a lot of people saw these horses perform In but very few had the honour of meeting each stallion personally It all went like this Two months before our son was bom Mac and I read of the coming of the Spanish Riding School and we immediately sent for tickets Dressage is one of my big interests so a trip to see these most highly trained horses was awaited with much anticipation Even cowboy Mac was keen to see this famous performance Just on a whim I wrote to Colonel Alois the director of the Spanish Riding School who was then in Toronto requesting permission to visit the stallions backstage after the show I never dreamed that the great man would find time to answer and was not surprised when he t However on the Saturday that we were due to drive the miles to Montreal we were living In the Ottawa Valley the phone rang The long distance operator asked for me personally and a sweet feminine European voice whispered over the wire Mrs was thanking me for my letter and saying how delighted the stallions would be to receive us Cats flew in every direction and skittered out of the house and vaulted the pasture fence stomach and all yelling for Mac Poor Patrick kicked In protest as I struggled Into my brand new maternity dress and leaped into the truck Friendly tittle beys The performance of the brought tears to our eye We were close enough to see the riders hands signal cues to the horses and even heard Co verbally encouraging horse Never ashmgasllive Willi see a rider like him We were equally Interested in two Morgan stallions lent for the tour by Mr and Mrs Ferguson of Rhode Island Drum Major and Parade happened to be great grandfather and great uncle of some of our But I wait until the bigger event after the snow we pushed our way backstage and down to the stables there to Dud we were to be shown around with the Austrian Ambassador and party How incongruous Cowboy Mac and terribly pregnant me mincing along the red carpet with the Austrian Ambassador What a surprise to find that none of the white stallions were confined to their stalls but were popping in and out to visit each other and their grooms I chatted with Shana discussed politics with StglavyGora admired Maestoso a new shoes and marvelled that these curious gentle pets were actually stallions and there was no animosity between the horses either Grooms cleaned the year old suede saddle as one horse casually licked his freshly polished bridle What a difference in the friendly plump little boys pottering around like cubs at camp and the glamorous playboy Morgan stallions chained In their stalls with ears back and talis twitching Travelling home in a daze I made great plans for getting the pregnancy over with polishing my saddle and deburring my mare We would take dressage lessons and set the world on fire Well eight years later two pregnancies are over the saddle polished the mare deburred and the lessons taken But I haven t set the world on fire yet Authorize signing park agreement A special meeting of Acton council Monday night passed a by law authorizing the mayor and clerk to sign an agreement with Paul Nielsen and Glno for the
