from their honeymoon in Ceylon By Wendy Thomson My two oldest offspring have been making rather nasty comments about my bonsai trees these days and giving me quite pointed glances At THAT age I suppose It does look a little odd how I keep hauling people In to look at my tree sprouts but for me to have growing properly Is quite a new experience and keep getting excited every time a new shoot comes Plant weed A few weeks back when I first mentioned that I was trying to grow the oriental miniatures I had one sprout In the Asiatic Cypress pot Gord said it was a weed and I guess he was right because another shoot came up which Is quite different Of course maybe IT S the weed but m afraid to take a chance and pull anything up for fear it a the wrong one Two Temples Fan Palms have appeared and seem to be growing well and two apple trees came up up this week The other half dozen pots are Just sitting there After buying a Cyclamen once and having it eaten right down to the bulb by our cats I figured the tree sprouts should be protected and I have them in one of those little tabletop plastic greenhouse affairs I suppose they d grow a lot faster If I stopped taking the lid off to look at them but my curiosity keeps getting the best of me I don t know what 111 do when the plants grow too high for the lid but maybe the cats and dogs wont be Interested At least the pots are small enough that the animals wont try to sleep In them but the old hound dog used to have the strangest eating tastes when It came to Rip has yes When I first planted a garden here Rip developed a yen for tulip buds The day before they were due to open he went down the rows and chomped the flowers off the stems leaving me with nothing but rows of stalks and leaves And in the vegetable garden while supposedly looking for raccoon tracks he d drift over to the pea patch take a pod in his front teeth pop it and remove the peas I don t know whether he sucked them out or rolled them out with his tongue like taking marrow but out they came Then he glance around rather furtively and trot back oft to his coon tracks Anyhow maybe I should ask son Jim to make- me a little pot stand and move my sprouts Into the bedroom where they can sit undisturbed in the sun when It shines listening to classical music and thinking beautiful thoughts all day Which reminds me of the Joke about the couple who gardened a lot the husband doing just what was necessary without fuss nor bother the wife humming and singing all the while When the wife s plant grew faster and bigger than the husband s she suggested that HE try a Utile singing and praising too But there was no way make a fool of himself One day however his wife saw him whispering to one of his plants which from that day on grew fantastically far bigger than anything SHE had A little smugly she said A little praise goes a long way if Her husband looked surprised and said Praise That praise I told that weed that if It hurry up and grow I was going to beat the heck out of it Since last week recipe came through all right with no mistakes 1 11 try another one I use for a bit of a change from plain vegetables BROCCOLI SUPREME 1
