nothing snort of a ripoff of the Canadian But we should remctnber thai most projects were worthwhile and provided much needed summer employ- ment to many students Unfor tunately the had ones get the publicity and the whole program suffers In an attempt to run things better this year the Government has appointed citizens from each community to provide advice on the accepta- of programs If the OFV staff is prepared to really listen to citizen input this step should help rid the barrel of the few bad apples Initiative from youth Prospective applicant groups should keep in mind that struc tured community organizations like the Chamber of Commerce lions Club Town Council etc cannot sponsor a program The intuitive must come from youth and the accent should be on ideas which materially benefit the community or some group of dis advantaged persons in the com munity and which provide 18 collisions 13 injured practical experience for young participants Projects cannot compete with existing businesses and they must be labor intensive Attempts should be made to offer new services to the community or new approaches to existing ser vices The program provide jobs for nearly 34000 young people Maximum earnings will be about per week for post- secondary students and about weekly for secondary school students This column is prepared about a week prior to publication thus at the tune of writing I have not seen the Governments Monday budget proposals I apologize for being unable to provide my usual incisive cogent analysis of this important aspect of government If have a problem idea attributed to the fact that wo were also crowning our carnival queen Kathy a grade nine student was chosen from the five finalists The girls and the three Judges Denis Gibbons Mervin Barber and Leslie Pickles had dinner Wednesday evening at the Royal Cafe We would like to thank the Judges and also the stores that contributed gifts for our Queen Parade Friday The parade left the High School Friday see of Rita Joe Last year when we had the Theatre Hour Company to the school they did a snort excerpt from this play It was very good at that time and encouraged students to want to see the performance in its entirety Warden promoting county art contest Halton County should hold a contest and present a prize for the painting or piece of art work that best depicts a part of Warden Anne MacArthur told the countys administration com mittee last week The warden outlined ideas on how a contest could be held with displays set up in the corridors at the administration building She suggested the county could buy the winning entry and hang it in the regional headquarters Noting that there would likely be entries from all parts of the county the warden wondered if municipalities would be interested in buying paintings for their administrative buildings Pleased with the activities during County Week last year the warden suggested that the event should be continued She indicated County Week would be an excellent time to hold the contest POLLOCK AND CAMPBELL Meet the AHS athletes By Ulan DcVrjes Susan Matthews is a IS year old Grade 10 student at Acton High school
