has written William Davis of Ontario and Premier William Bourassa of Quebec Indicating a delegation was being formed of the Tanners Association the Shoe Manufacturers Association of Canada the Ontario of laying the groundwork for Actons centennial celebrations the eight member centennial commission has decided their Job as a steering committee Is done They will bow out In favor of a centennial committee with a much larger membership representing all Acton organizations Commission cochairman Jack Carpenter gave a delegation from the Chamber of Commerce this Information Saturday morning at one of the commissions regular breakfast meetings at Dominion Hotel Carpenter said the commission will present their new proposal In full to Acton council at a Joint meeting soon The commission has proposed that the centennial committee be headed by a chairman and a secretary with lots of time preferably paid Under them will be a fund raising committee charged with raising money for the centennial projectthe renovation and enlargement of the community centre Seven other subcommittee are proposed working in conjunction with the first two They are Program Building At Home Decorations Country Market Youth and Historical It is proposed that one member of the present commission will serve on each subcommittee In an advisory capacity Mr Carpenter has the names of several Acton people designated to serve on the sub committees most of them submitted by varioiworganlzationa and he has contacted several others who have Indicated Interest He expressed the commission a Interest in keeping the Acton country market alive In 1973 and 1974 as well since it was partly through the effort of the commission that an Opportunities for Youth grant was sought and the market succeeded The group of youths who operated the market are not eligible to try for the same grant again but the commission hopes to keep It operating Mr Carpenter also emphasized that many of the commission a activities have been Instigated to provide the proper climate for Actons centennial Including neighborhood dances where it was never expected a profit would emerge He said It was the commissions intention to get the people of Acton to know one another by participating In the various projects Quizzed by the five member delegation from the Chamber of Commerce about fund raising the cochairman Bald the commission had postponed the major fund raising effort until better weather He reviewed some of the activities which had raised money including the Brick campaign an entirely voluntary mailing effort with no attempt to door to door or by person Mr Carpenter said the commission had run Into Its share of disappointments but had arranged a splendid program for which would make the year
