Queen attended by area couples By Ian Professor Taylor of the University of Guelph said in an interview that the cedars of this and surrounding areas are in fested with an insect known as the Cedar Leal Mite If the insect goes unchecked more than acres of cedars could possibly be killed Lost October there was a heavy fall of foliage from the cedars particularly in the Rockwood Acton Guelph area At the time this accounted for the brown appearance of the trees but this spring when very little new foliage appeared further inquiries were made Damage was found In many of the trees and in laboratory tests a micro scopic mite was discovered In side the leaves The mite is the second stage of development of a small moth It attacks the foliage by tunnelling inside the leaves eventually killing them before It emerges as a moth in late June and July There arc two methods of control which have been re commended Easiest and perhaps the most effective recommended by the Ministry of Natural Resources is the use of Cygon which is painted or sprayed onto the trunk or branches It is absorbed by the tree and carried to the infected ports killing the mite Another method used by the University of Guelph is the application of Malathion 50 per cent which must be sprayed over the entire tree Malathion is an insecticide which kills on contact It con be toxic not only to the user but to domestic animals and wildlife A number of district people were among the invited guests to attend the state dinner in con ncction with the Queen visit on Tuesday June including Mrs John Root MPP
