OUR READERS WRITE Expertise of experts questioned Sept IS Dear Sir To say I was disturbed when learned that County Council wan t going to listen to citiiens groups on the question of garbage disposal but would take experts would bo an under statement I was outraged In the past we the of experts and the result has been polluted wells methane gas explosions not to speak of the stinking vermin ridden morasses we call sanitary landfill sites In my opinion It is high time we questioned the expertise of these experts One have to be a gourmet to Know when a meal is unpalatable In there are recycling groups groups and other informed people who can offer good advice on this question a very important question that could cause a rift between north and South that could never be healed I personally am not an expert on gar bage disposal but I am Informed enough to have been Invited by well known publishing house to write an article on the ultimate answer to the garbage problem The article was accepted by the technical editors I contend garbage should be incinerated to alleviate the energy crisis There are many plants all over the world that burn and produce energy Cost For brevity sake J will quote only the city of Montreal s plant initial cost 111 million but there are benefits No or little air soil or water pollution No vermin The total cost of Montreal s garbage disposal per ton will be slashed toft per ton the result of the sale of steam and monies from the salvaged materials metals etc Now is the time to act on the garbage problem In five years we will be up to our ears in garbage It Is interesting to note that in the S A the Stale of Connecticut is spending million on a resource recovery program consisting of plants bach plant will separate reclaimables metals glass elc The remainder will be Incinerated to produce electrical power The technology Is here we should end the archaic method of dumping garbage quarries ravines excavations etc or legislating our offal back vard The Acton Free Press Wed September IP B3 Urge county sell build HUGE Clydesdales stand for judging County Council should consider sell the County strallon Building and Court House on Sleelcs Ave In Milton to provincial government That was tho concensus of opinion at a meeting held to discuss the future of tho building Regional Chairman Allan Masson Warden Mrs A J MncArthur Jim Snow Kerr and members of the wardens select committee on regional government had been Invited to attend the meeting fill Mandny for first time In sucks lis D Gibbons photo needed by formers was an almost unanimous show of support for the idea of Investigating tha of tho building price Snow said prlcn was discussed but no definite solution was reached He Indicated tho ministry would he interested In paying market value for property and building If It was pur chased No indication was of what price was being Snow noted the building had been built by the county 13 years ago primarily as for those ad ministering Justice building was built the province has assumed responsibility for the ad ministration of justice Therefore about BO per cent of the building Is now Ming used by the province Snow notes It would bo cheaper for county to sell It and build a new building rather than try to renovate tho BO per cent being used as registry offices sheriff a offices crown attorney offices the court and a number of auxiliary offices While the county council can sell the existing building a decision to purchase new quarters will be a regional government decision County Council can however recommend a solution to the accommodation problem to the now council The last resolution pawed by County Council suggests the council will retain the building for regional use and ask the province to vacate tho building and set up new court facilities elsewhere Reports of the moat recent meeting indicate a change In opinion someone else s back Corner improvement plans turned down No need for second airport A Johnson the Clear Sir I fghteen months ago the Government announced the siting new international airport at Pickering Ontario This was to be the second of two International airports around Toronto and the third international Airport radius of miles between Toronto and Montreal Since that lime People or Planes has led a mounting op position to this project Our objections are based on the fact that there is not a proven need for another in airport either now or in the predictable future The estimated cost ranging from GOO million Government figure to billion represents a colossal expenditure by the Federal Government This is being made at a time when mere are higher priorities for such a sum of money These priorities include public housing the correction of regional disparities arid the stimulation of decentralization from the Metro Toronto area But the Federal Government has plunged headlong the airport planning They have hoped that opposition airport will die as arable farmland turns to weed with the departure of fanners who have been expropriated and bought out The nirport and associated complex will occupy some acres of class 1 farm land produces a major portion of food supplies needed to maintain a stable cost of living In this area The Government has been forced to announce because or the opposition to the land grab a Hearing of Inquiry The terms of reference of the hearing are weak and It is doubtful that real information will be forthcoming unless citizens across Canada take up the cause There is no need for a second inter national airport at Toronto There is need for correction of regional disparities provision of jobs In areas outside Toronto there is minimal unemployment at Pickering decentralization of major industries from Metro Toronto If the Government proceeds with this airport rich Metro will get richer poor will get poorer Yours verv M Godfrey Chairman People or Planes Proposed Improvements at the intersection of Highway and have been turned down Acton council learned by letter that tho budget of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications is ready and Rabid foxes There have been at least two case of rabies reported In this area recently Agricultural Representative Henry Stanley told the Ad ministration Committee of County Council last He said two farms lost slock to rabid foxes On one occasion five beef calves were killed on one farm and a Jersey cow was killed another farm no further connecting link Improvements enn be on a cost sharing basis Reeve McKcnzle showed the most annoyance council meeting Where could get a more outdated corner than Ihaf They lust brush us off It pathetic Mr McKcnilc observed that ing of Highway from Acton to had been undertaken enough when the residents complained and
