The Acton Free Press Wed October 1973 Milton has woman mayor Mrs Anne Mac Arthur be came the first lady mayor to be elected in Milton history Monday when she defeated incumbent Mayor Brian Best by 225 votes in an election packed with excitement and surprises She ended Mayor Brian Best six year term as the town s chief elected official by a 225 vote margin winning to 2 Mrs took an early lead and when only polls from the urban ward re mained to be reported she held onto a lead of about 300 she had managed to build up early in the evening By 11 Best the new mayorelect and conceded the election Minutes later Reeve Bob conceded to bent deputy reeve Marjory after losing by a nar row 10 vote margin for the regional councillor seat for Milton ward two en before the final votes were cast Mrs was chatting about future plans with newsmen She spoke of a need for all members of the new council to pull together and think of the new town of Milton as a unit Mrs appeared at the election headquarters is an honest hard working woman and I support her whole hear tedly Watson noted that he on occasion disagreed with the reeve and said so when he did He said he had been accused of following Mrs s lead and denied that charge He said that when they agreed he sup ported her wholeheartedly and when he disagreed he said so Mrs MacArthur jumped into an early lead and held it With about 15 polls in Milton
