Rotarian interviews arthritic sufferer The Rev Andrew publicity chair man for the drive Tor funds for the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society to be held on October and icwcd Mrs Herb Anne Dodds who has experienced for many years the inconveniences physical and psychological of this disease He is hopeful that the of this community will respond generously to the Ilotanans appeal on behalf of this ngcncy which is doing so much Tor so many afflicted persons The interview Anne how long have you been afflicted with arthritis Since was 18 a did you f aware of it How first become started In my right knee joint but it was undiagnosed for a number of years The swelling gradually got worse but it was really undiagnosed until I was taking my nurse iraininfc Where was that At St Joseph Hospital that a year course Bermuda Did your arthritic condition limit much In your training No not really I t let it It was not then so bad but it gradually got worse When graduated went to Dr It off an for treatment In April of 1959 I went to Ber muda it was the rainy season and my knee started to swell again went to a doctor there and he decide whether I had arthritis for sure He kept me in hospital for a month and sent me home to Canada on crutches In Sept of that year I hod a synovectomy lining removed from ihe knee joint In And what followed was in and out of hospital about a month in every six until Herb and were married in In I en tcrcd university and I was on drugs the whole year in order to keep going Ricky was born in White pregnant I was in good health but about six weeks after his birth I had a major flareup and it took about months for me to get going again I was fairly well after that and I worked for three years 70 teaching at St Joseph in charge of the phasing out of the senior program But by July of 19701 could hardly walk I was on crutches and sick most of the lime As soon as I finished work I was in the hospital for two weeks and then I went in October to the Chedoke Centre the llolbrook Pavilion a rehabilitation centre Artificial joint What did they do for you there They put an artificial joint my knee and a prosthesis in my what was the value of the prosthesis It enabled me to turn my hand over and to do it with a smooth motion Tell me a little more about the care you received Well they tned to help us to adjust to the disease They carried out extensive rehabilitation procedures which were extremely good and better than I vc ever observed anywhere else What has the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society done for you More than I can ever repay a year after I came home physiotherapist came here to supervise my exercises and to make sure I was alright Tremendous Have you had fairly con contact with CARS since you were in Chedoke Yes The physio slopped coming after a year but when 1 phoned she came again and did so until last April I never called yet but a therapist has come and at least twice a year they make on assessment of my con ditlon The present physiotherapist is t rem en dous Were you referred to CARS through your doc tor Yes through Centre I presume that everyone who docs get help is retcrred by a doctor As far as I know this is the case Do you know of others in this community being helped by C A R S Yes I know of at least two other ladies who were receiving the attention of the physiotherapist And when you consider Ihe time in and the cost of travel and the salary of a physiotherapist this is a very expensive treatment hut it is really great And you know hair of it is just having someone who is really cheerful coming in to en courage you to keep on fighting You really have to work hard to do the things you can do for yourself and not be crushed by all the things you con do anymore Support So you feel thai people in Acton should support the work of the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society I sure do and particularly for the sake of the many children who need help The research necessary for the control of this can only I done if people support it RENT A CASCADE HOT WATER HEATER AC CARPETS FOR QUALITY SERVICE SATISFACTION 20 oil ALL REMNANTS INDOOROUTDOOR LOOP SHAG tram 495 up 10 on all wall
