The Acton Free Press Wed Dec WI happy gathering held Christmas of the past by Wendy Thomson Kid known then what I know now Famous words but nothing of the kind crossed my mind November 30 as they strapped me to the operating table I looked up and said to the anaesthesia Upside down you look like our family vet and he replied I might work like too hmmmT If Id hod any sense Idve hopped off the table and trotted down the hall bonnot v tubes and flapping hospital gown landing the removal of two wisdom teeth was a breeze Didnt feel a thing For two hours anyway And for the past week Ive still been drugged and dopey Its the incidental things that got to me Like the loss of a perfectly good reputation You see to begin with I couldnt talk My throat wouldnt manage more than one word at a time like hurt pill sick help and stuff like that By the time Id got the word out I was usually asleep again Over the weekend things Improved and three word sentences were the thing Of the words were of one syllable I still hurt I feel sick etc Alone Then came Monday and everybody look off to school and work leaving me In bed with three pillows two sleeping bags a can of apple juice my antibiotics and the phone The phone was my undoing I could answer Ye were still beyond me and say no mm mnmn and oh However If the con venation progressed beyond that even my one syllable words let me down as I had to talk very slowly around the stitches By enunciating very carefully to of set the slurring caused by the numbness In my lower lip I managed to sound stewed to the gills After a couple of em barrasslng calls I gave up A man phoned for and when no hung up I could hear him shaking his head and sympathizing with who had a wife who was already soused by noon Compulsive After that I should have lust let the phone ring but Im a compulsive phone answerer The next call was somebody needing directions out here I gave them slowly carefully and not making too many mistakes but I kept getting my rights and lefts mixed up Anyhow ihey never did keen on anyone seeing me There had been swelling to it mildly Whenever looked at he started laughing and muttering something about a chipmunk with Its cheeks full or walnuts However that was mostly one and there was Just the My nose looked all right but felt like it had met with a baseball and 1 had faintly black eyes Both cheeks were Mrs Calvin
