Ask Premier to intercede for better Hydro route The Acton Free Press Wed March The group known as The Interested Citizens of North and Wellington have sent a plea to Premier William Oil vis and his Cabinet suggesting the Government take a close look at the to alternative they presented for On tario Hydro power corridor The group outlined seven advantages to the nice to route which present Hydro plans do not include They note it would eliminate one crossing of the Fscarpment affect less larmland eliminate crashing areas of hazardous icing be more environmentally require less new corridor establish a green belt and move the proposed Milton station the commission rejected the to route in a report issued this month but the cabinet must still approve the reports recommendations The local group he 1 1 eves the Untie to route has not been given a fair shake by Hydro Following is the lev I of the letter March l74 On- Hon Durable Willi Iurliiin Ontario lie Ontario Government Save Most alternate route was summarily sen ted to We would tike to add additional information on the advantages of such an alternate quoting the this proposal received con siderable popular support the provided more information Citizens Group Million County Federation of Agriculture ftiilepavers of Comerneil Citizens signatures our contention that if the Solandt Report is accepted in its present we must reluctantly agree Although we have concerns regarding the lions as it affects the Bruce Line we do not these concerns to the paramount issue MAIN POINT Our main point is that an irreversible plan is being proposed which will commit the Toronto centred region to massive future development It is quite clear from the report Ontario Hydro testimony that at present and in the loreseeable future the generating stations West of the would produce a great deal more power than would be used by tile load in that area while the power demand hast the would greatly exceed the power production in thai area A review of the BUI report Indicates the grid system to support the Toronto centred area is capable handling HO megawatts of peak capacity with megawatts m normal operation this capacity Is almost to the Ontario Hydro estimated requirement for all of Ontario by the year IfJu 11 is clear from these figures that the Ontario Hydro Toronto centred region to grow substantially in the lulure The laymen on the other hand only conclude that if you vote lor the plan in its present form you will give the approval to the ultimate destruction of Canadas most valuable life supporting resource our farmland below the Escarpment not only for the reasons often stated that the Hydro lines will damage the farmland in their passing but that buildings roads factories will all follow and will permanently remove our most productive farmland from food production In the information presented to the Commission Ontario Hydro used extrapolated growth figures based on growth rates to estimate their future requirements for tin- Toronto centred region If any growth pattern plan to restrict growth in the Toronto centred region and valuable ml J ml the present Hydro corridors should be reviewed particularly with respect lo BruceMilton line Further if is the goal of the Government that a more wide spread distribution of population and industry with the development of new centres away from the Toronto centred region le considered then again the plan should be carefully reviewed As an example if the planned Hydro grid were an Ontario grid as opposed to a grid for the Toronto centred region one area has been missed This area is the south shore Georgian Hay Does this mean this area will forever be a res inilcd growth urea We have not heard of any Govern ment plan placed such restraint on this area AUDI 1 IONAL ADVANTAGES OF BRUCE TO I I I ONE ESCARPMENT CROSSING One now crossing of the Escarpment would be required Hut being at Highway and would eliminate the crossing Limchouse All other crossings are now part of existing planned Hydro corridors For example the Hydro Is planning a corridor Irom Bruce to Owen Sound and from to Colling wood Between these two centres there exists alio kV corridor which could to handle the I FARMLAND AFFECTED The second advantage would be to eliminate a long line irom Bruce to the Milton area which crosses predominantly 1 J soil classification farmland ELIMINATE CROSSING AREA OF HAZARDOUS ICING A third feature would be to remove this line from a very mtious hazard lhal being the Icing conditions in he high hilly ureas southern part of Wellington County This hazard was confirmed the hearing by testimony from Environment Canada A ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE It would also permit the mast environmentally acceptable mile lor the Hruce to Milton area as determined by Hydro and us stated by their senior Walker at the reient Erin Hydro meeting of March 12th and this was furlhcr sup ported by the Bill Report and Bruce Hewlett testimony at the hearings LESS NEW CORRIDOR A lurther benefit would be that less new corridor would be required since a significant part of this route from Bruce A green belt could be established between Kitchener Guelph to separate growing metropolitan areas This we un derstand is consistent with present plans for the Toronto Centred region MOVE MILTON STATION The Milton station could be moved above the escarpment with considerable saving of agricultural land and impact to this severely affected area In conclusion we highly respect the work of Solandt however wg believe the above arguments go beyond the scope his report We sincerely hope that you and your cabinet will lake this great opportunity to demonstrate your progressive leadership by making a decision in favor of Hydro corridors will ensure i planned decentralization of growth of the Ontario population i do everything possible to save prime farmland the concept of multi use corridors We respectfully request that on opportunity be granted to meet discuss this alternate in greater detail Yours very truly INTERESTED CITIZENS OF NORTH AND WELLINGTON John C Schneider Aft Iff I Hit while RECEIVED only minor
