Acton Free Press Wed April 17 John Root says hydro corridors should avoid good farm land John Root MP for went to bat for rural residents of his In debute In the Ontario I ok Is inture March the carefully tho of John Schneider of It It Acton Tor from to Kuan Instead of through Rood in Krln township and inns Mr limit intimated report recommending corridors do not Indorse Nome of the scenic recreational land from Bruce to but good wan InHulling to for think II is time the Government Hydro thai the production of food nd agricultural land are Just on Important or In my opinion more than preiervlng popular and recreational terrain Southern Ontario he stated Thin province has an abundance of recreational areas It him a limited amount of choice agricultural land he told the legislature Inn If a partial of his remarks an reported In Hansard Hint date the years that I Merged on the Ontario Water Commission and the Ironmontal Hour I UK Hoard I have sat on over ISO hearings from one end of this province to the and I have found that the public hearing the applicant is more conscious of his if he has to face he public and what he has la mind In he main he pisMfc want in inntinn regarding the project thai In the subject of the hearing before a decision la made Most reasonable people accept sound projects If they at least have a chance to express their and the project explained Mr Speaker to establish a corridor from Bradley Junction to the tine Hydro held three scries of Waterloo most of the lounty of These meetings were held in the first place to get the environmental Impact of lines running the area The first series of meetings was to get the en impact on the whole area regardless of where the lines might go The Wtond series was held on the basis of the Ijlput of the first scries and showed possible corridors Now In the third series they nave come out with a pretty definite proposal as to where the power should go through I have attended six of these meetings and w niched the reaction or people In llie main the farm people are reasonable people Unlit they had some where the Mies might go they had little to say Hut on We other hand he who not particularly Interested in the production of food hut are more interested In maintaining the the the ftcrentlnnal areas wen quite vocal think that this had some effect on Hydros second series of meetings when hey came back with a number of on possible corridors When the arm people to realize that these Jn many areas were going over good agricultural land began to Become more vocal An engineer in mv home township of Mr John Schneider who had given a fit of thought to how best to get he con Keeling links built made a suggestion Ihot icy firing all the power down In one dorr dor to Juin the Nantlcoko Pickering line at Highway and go through the gap adjoining Highway Hydro objected to this suggestion in ting they did not want all their lines together In cuse of storm or sabotage or perhaps an airplane crash which could fcnlly disrupt the whole system They said they would like to have two lines A sug gestion was made that one line might cross the escarpment at Instead of bringing all of the power through west of Mr Schneider made another proposal that take the power across from Bradley junction lo and bring it down to the Pickering line on an existing corridor that goes north from and Kleinburg Apparently at the present time there is Space in this for the line proposal would fiav w the gap between the two lines find provided the protection thai Hydro wanted Mr Speaker will tind the to the to proposal on of he commission report It argued that the use of his route would flrently Increase the security of the power fransmisslon from lo Toronto toad and it would moke It reasonable to Concentrate the rest of the Bruce power and pie power from In one corridor parallel to Highway PI support at the hearings As far as tho commission knows there was no one In area affected by the lo lino the meeting so It was unlikely there would have been any expressed Ontario Hydro at the proposal very carefully and discussed the pros and cons in f indentation and cross examination before ho commission They any Ontario had repeatedly expressed Its opposition to system It on both security and aesthetic rounds During the cross examination ley did agree that the proposal this Is he In Issn proposal would Improve the security system for the short term future but felt that he proposal had no advantages Hon can read the comments the to proposal on pages and of the report I am Interested In tho Inst paragraph W where days iwing the close of the commission hearings he group submitted a final paper on their proposal of he proposals that would not lie easy to a sot environmentally acceptable route the to line because It might have to some the mosl popular scenic recreational terrain in soulhern Ontario Since Ontario Hydro presented convincing evidence that the to lino would not produce useful Improvement in the irunsmlssion system the commission concludes that no further consideration should be given o Hie line Mr Speaker that comment really ills me The opposition the line was because It would Home of the popular scenic and recreational terrain In southern Ontario I think it Is time that the government and Hydro realized thai the production of food and good agricultural land as Important or in my opinion mine Important than preserving popular scenic and recreational terrain in southern Ontario On pages and Mr Speaker you will read comments ding the crossing in mind that to reach imebouse the power line will to i some of the finest cultural land in Wellington and counties Indeed In the southern part of this is you rrln and go on through into Mutton I you will find very scenic recreation areas that will either have lo be or Ihe lines In my case go across class I anil farm land You will note on where says all ailable alternntiv were carefully considered before tho commission reluctantly came to conclusion that on balance this the roule I hut Ihe line should lake That statement Indicates lo mo that had some doubts Ihal on balance the crossing was the right crossing So suggest Mr Speaker before any final decision Is made regarding where the second line will go that cry careful thought be given with regard to priorities This province has abundance of mreallonal areas It has a limited amount of choice agricultural land In my opinion to put the preference on the scenic and recreational areas above choice cultural land Is wrong decision And so Mr Speaker I would that very care ful analysis be made of the Impact of bringing a line from the Bradley junction to one of the proposed routes in Wellington and counties funnel ling them to the scenic township of Erin to cross he border into the Hills to approach he crossing to Join he Nantlcoko Pickering Line I can only say Mr Speaker that the farm people of Wellington county arc greatly concerned The various lines that may lead Into Erin township cross every municipality in the area that I have the honor to represent I would be remiss in my duties If I did not say the government had better take another look crossing over on low grnde agricultural land and coming down on the Klein burg corridor which we are advised has space for another line I know that Hydro feel thai sometime In the future they may want that space but with advancing tech and the possibility of underground lines in the future surely we don t have to crisscross over choice agricultural land when there are other alternatives avail able Mr Speaker I want to be fair and say that he farm people appreciate what Hydro has done In the way of rural in In my first election was that we forming with the same lamps and lanterns thai our parents grandfathers had used In fli per cent of the farmers had no power ana 75 per cent in Wellington POSITION AVAILABLE FIRE DISPATCHER for Fire
