The Acton Free Press We Feb Former MP helps Halton Helping Hands former MP for Terry Connor is lending a helping hand to Helping Hands by many charitable groups after his political life was brought to on end by the last federal election he chose Helping Hinds as one of his activities He is now chairman of the board of the group that has as its aim the keeping of elderly and disabled people In the dignity and independence of their own home by helping with jobs they could not do themselves Mr Connor became acquainted with Helping Hand when he was and they applied for I grant The second year when the grant was turned down Mr Connor organized letter writing campaign which flooded the Minister The grant was reviewed then renewed The I I grant ran out in June 1974 and is now operating an a reduced budget under the Elderly Persons Act In order to receive a grant each municipality must raise its own money and is needed from Hills regular basis homes arc visited In the town and 150 In the whole region This figure Is down from when Helping Hands were operating with a I grant still check on former clients but on an In frequent basis There are six full time and live parltime employees who goto the homes elderly and physically disabled people do heavy they can do them selves iherc is still some car house painting and rampbulldingdonc but these jobs arc now being done by volunteers many of them Appleby College and Halt on high school students Previously Helping Hands employed two car pentcrs for such jobs In an attempt to keep these people in their own homes where they want to be efforts arc made to do spring yard work and removal of storm and screen windows but on the reduced budget this service is periodic While some or the recipients pay a share of the cost many cannot pay The information and despatching service Is operated by multiple sclerosis patient in Her own home She lines up people in need of the service usually referred by agencies and sends the cleaning women out to their homes Helping Hands Is looking for support from this town to raise their share since an amount raised in part of cannot be applied against anolhcr municipality InOiKvlllc the United Way covers per cent of the cost hut with no United Way In Hills the full share of must be raised Mr Connor is hoping lo appeal service clubs to come to the aid of the group but stresses any individual
