thought Hilton Hills should alio growth Both he his partner Bill Gault urban planning student suggested that the problem of could help the town resist growth if that is what 1 wants How nor thu thought hit if a proposed special servicing system is ever built for Peel and growth pressures would increase In Hills because servicing would no longer be a big obstacle They described the special servicing system as being a super sewer system Hills appears to be lucky because it is a fairly wealth community this can help discourage growth If town has money and can keep taxis down the battle against growth Is a lot easier When people start wanting Toronto level services like new arenas but still want low taxes councils arc very templed to allow growth so they can increase revenues the budding planners ex plained Thc noted planners don formulate policy hut are really Just technicians the council with raw datn and alternatives for tht future design municipality On the topic of regional government the student planners thought of Georgetown and Acton has ireitcd tremendous rivalry between the two urban areas The warned that because of the rivalry methods must found to Increase the linkages between Acton and Georgetown Acton has always associated with and Georgetown with Toronto They haven con sldered themselves con to each other and they will have to learn they are and that they are one town coming here In May the two students have been working on land use surveys In Acton and Georgetown the official plan for Acton land use in the rural areas of Hills rezoning ap plications and severance applications They observed that there Is a high standard of planning In Georgetown but not much planning has been done in Acton or There is a much longer history of planning In Georgetown and the stun are high Acton hasnt dont very much planning and not very many background studies have been done Planning in the rural areas have also been rather limited Standards ore poor in both areas Wood said Wood noted rurnl planning Is something new and people arc going to have to get used to it He pointed out that they have been talking to farmers URBAN PLANNING students Philip Wood and Bill look over a land use map for ward one in Halton Hills The two students are working for the town s planning department this summer and are handling a number of different planning studies within the town in Fsqualng and he farmers think the region interim pi inning policies are restrictive but he thinks this Is all part of getting used to rural planning Rural planning is a new idea and involves many problems Planners will simply have to educate rural residents about what planning Is and why it Is needed he suggested They said most of their work has surrounded developing background banning studies One thing they have done is a mailing and personal in commercial survey with merchants in both the urban areas and Ihcy arc disappointed they haven t received as much feed back from businessmen as they thought they would They were surprised to find some of the people they contacted during their commercial study l feel planning was that important The two hope they will
