proven each Thursday On day parents were invited to the school to go on a tour and ask any questions or give any opinions that they may have concerning our school I sat in on this last week to take notes for thla article Dean Fink our principal was the host and explained how this program is arranged by Bill Coats Each Thursday different group of parents Is Invited Our tour started off In the library with the floor being turned over to Ken Ellis He stresses the need for parent volunteers In the Resource Centre After a description of the services available we pro ceeded on to Student Ser vices Here we were told of the counsellors Job and If you have any problems or ques tions involving your childs program this the place to go To pick up the pace we Beaded towards the gym classes These classes are quite full but for everyone In the school an intramural pro gram Is offered Three later We then moved on to the Art room and then the Indus trial Arts shop The parents noticed that the shop was quite small but Mr Fink told us that the new school will have three shops Last but not least were the Biology and Science Labs Here we saw the year three Biology class In session This is perhaps the first step towards the unit system Each student and his partner work together enabling each to work at his own pace We finished the tour by returning to Mr Finks office where a discussion took place The parents felt that school has changed a great deal since they attended However they all seemed quite impressed with the attitude and work that was being accomplished by the majority of Buidents One major issue that Im sure Is an Important one 1b the of the new school Iter a look at the cramped facilities at Acton high Im sure there is no doubt as to the need for a new school busily being prepared by the students Another room where volun teers are much appreciated is the reading room Miss Sue Baker told how she runs her classes for students with reading difficulties Here comprehension exercises and Just general reading habits are worked on Speed reading is another aspect of this small Set busy room We then met Dowries as he was passing through the hall between classes He has divided his class Into two sec tions business and consumer math and technical math Perhaps one of the most interesting and Impressive rooms was the typing room Here the secretarial practice class was working through a regular business period They have the Lester Hill Corpora tion In full operation This Is a makebelieve company and the students do everything from taking orders to pro cessing Invoices and pay- cheques Each department has a bead and the bis exe cutives are Roy McMillan and Mrs Mary Louise If every company was run as well aa this one Is we would have no problems Students at Lord Elgin By MeUw Wednesday December 3 Rick Boychucks grade 11 computer sdence students went on their second trip to Lord Elgin high school Burlington The trip lasted all day which gave us the opportunity to run a lot of programs Using the IBM computer first allows us to nave our programs back la about 10 or SO seconds much faster than the usual one or two day wait It also gives us ex perience in using the com puter and knowing how it White stuff Tuesdays east wind brought In the largest snowfall of the season so far Drivers were apparently careful Feeling the pressure of testa and exams Well smile because holidays are on the way On December the school Is out until January so a nice long holiday Is In store for all of you who worked so hard Last week the grade 10s had a reading teat This test was given by Miss Sue Baker and designed to determine student reading ability as far as speed and comprehension goes Also this enables Miss Baker to spot people who may have problems In reading so that they may correct them now On Saturday Acton hosted the boys basketball tour nament Our boys did very well against schools from all over the province Those practices may sometimes seem like a drag but they cer tainly pay off Everyone keep working on your skits for the Christmas assembly The grade are working to put together what they consider to be the best assembly ever however they need your help In order to moke it a success Ticket sales for the Christ mas Dance are underway You will have Just one more day to get your tickets The group Charity Brown and the dress Is semiformal Just 00 a person or a couple will get you Into this Christmas Ball If you decide to come at the last minute youll have to pay the penalty of fifty cents more per per son Last Friday Mr Ancient History class went to the Royal Ontario Museum for the study of the Eygptian culture THE TRAFFIC WAS BUSY during the basketball practice in Robert Little schools gym Monday Here Brian Wong hurls a ball at the basket as two other players return with balls they have just retrieved after letting their shots go The hour long practice included a game in which positional play was
