lockout Public Health Nurses won I be back on the job until at least June Regional Council met for close to two hours in a closed session Wednesday and finally decided to enforce a one week long lock out The nurses went on strike last week with nurses from 25 boards of Health cross the province Nurses want the right lo strike re moved and replaced with binding arbitration and they want more than two per cent of the provincial health budget spent on preventive measures The resolution parsed by council represented a soft of the position taken by the Board of Health earlier The Board had said thai the nurses wouldn be taken back until a settlement had been reached The contract has been under negotiation since last November Lockout to June The resolution passed Wed nesday indicates that em ploy merit will be made avail able to the nurses as of June providing that it will bo thai lime on Board of Health Chairman David Coons denounced the actions of the Council and the Board in a press conference held immediately after the resolution was passed I do not support that it ion I don feel we should retaliate A lock out is not in Ihc best interest of the citizens who desperately require continuation of Public Health service A lock out serves absolutely no purpose in my opinion Coons said He said several councillors felt they would be backing down if they did not enforce Ihe lock out Mr Coons who is also chairman of the negotiating said he would in vile nurses back to tht bargaining table Ik said he hoped nurses would accept offer They are professional people They no more want to be out on that picket line than you or he told reporters Mr Coons said he hoped a compromise could be reached but noted the region had ready offered the maximum of eight per tent under the Anil Inflation Board guidelines If they can clearly in areas that have been overlooked 1 quite pre pared to look at it he said Coons noted however that chances of nurses being able to claim need for a
