B The Acton Free Press Wed August A nail in our coffin Another nail was driven into the coffin of the town that used to be called Acton this week when customers received notices in the mail which state that effective Sept 1 Acton water billing will be transferred to the region water office in Georgetown Acton people must pay their water bills there or at one of the local banks The banks open at less convenient hours charge for the service of course Local people have been assured by our three representatives that a town office will remain open in Acton So it seems ridiculous not to have water bills paid there Our town s autonomv was taken from us with regional government but this kind of nibbling awa of services is a newer serious concern With one purpose of the town office gone that be a good reason for a remote eounul to recommend closing it altogether Hills council not made a decision of the fate of the Acton office since water billing was removed With the water billing the major portion of the work of Lorna Clark Removing local government another step from the people is making residents disgusted and angrv The monej saved bv not sharing office expenses says the region could be offset b various factors For one thing there will now be double delivery of bills instead of a single delivery by hand In the past hydro staff have delivered both hydro and water bills together door to door Postal rates will soon be up to a dime The Acton hydro office has been contacted on the question of meter reading Ibis has been done jointly one person leading until power and miters Then then s the matter of the quarter ihaige at the banks for bill paid there All those ters add up to of money Thes costs some of the 15 WW alleged savings If the of the game is ef and bigness we suggest in the interests of tins and the holt billing be brought to Casts would be lower here A plant owner who just moved his factory here praises local people as hard working and careful The Free Press was criticized a couple of weeks ago by a Hills councillor Hyde for being parochial That was over the issue of the municipal complex Petitions proved the Free Press editorial opinion was shared by many people Parochial as ever what we want now is assurance we will have a local government office in Acton and consideration to having our water bills paid there as they have been Those terrible diseases Last week s Free Press had more than its usual share of health scare stories We had in the same issue encephalitis Lassa fever and swine flu They tell us the scare is now over for encephalitis and Lassa fever Swine flu season is still ahead of us Nobody here got encephalitis from a mosquito bite Nobody caught fever from a carrier via Africa Nobody got the Legion disease either Some will get flu this winter as many always do When you read the small type in stones about swine flu you discover that although it is the same strain that killed so many years ago nowadays antibiotics can control most of the side effects which were in fact the killers These scare stones are interesting and many joke about them as well as feeling a twinge of apprehension But these stones should be put in their proper perspective That is no cases against a district population of about possible victims Vet there are many other ailments with us every day And most of these we ourselves can do something about with the use of good common sense We know about pasteurization and refrigeration Summertime cooks are careful with salads Children are immunized routinely and parents art aware of the need There are hazards in the water the home in the factory and on the roads Routinely we are conscious of ways to prevent cidents We pick up toys from the floor nail down loose boards have our cars checked Minor ailments are treated with respect Many have had first aid training and people are aware of signs that spell caution People stop smoking many wise ones never begin Drinkers often look after each other Putting things in proportion we all live daily with awareness of health problems We are able to prevent some of them and to treat others promptly or seek doctor advice But for small talk it fever encephalitis and swine flu Of this and that At last a perfect weekend Outdoors was the place to be and owners of those inviting backyard pools finally got their weekend money s worth Picnics swims barbecues trip to the Ex cottaging boating it was a great time to be away or right at home True merchants say business wasnt good on Saturday but they had plenty of rainy Saturdays this summer to make up for it Local children were given an opportunity to see live theatre last Wednesday afternoon at the library but very few came These special programs offered at the library have always been good but have seldom drawn many people in Acton despite their advertising Theatre Max last week played before what must have been its smallest audience ever It was interesting to come across a headline in a Free Press of November 1956 declaring Off- Street Parking Must Be Found The town planners were telling council of the need And still the debate goes on Fishermen were surprised by the picture of a pound pike in last week s paper Apparently there havent been fish of that size in Fairy Lake reported for five years or so The regional municipality of Durham made an interesting discovery Last April welfare cheques for all employable recipients were held for personal collection at their nearest office instead of being mailed At the end of the first day cheques remained Five days later 52 recipients had called in or complained After two months of the Durham experiment between and cases are being closed each pay day at a saving of every two weeks EDEN MILLS SIXTH ANNUAL P Wilson Please feed the wildfowl Aelon lrie Press J7r Willow Street Ontario Sir to Mrs letter of Inst week I too have noticed how hungry the wildfowl appear to be Signs arc placed points requesting the public to refrain from feeding and most obey Still those birds are hungry Somebody to feed them I admit it is a sad reflection on society that we have regressed lo the point where feeding the birds as compared to nature intended way has become essential to their survival The birds are not at fault this is strictly the outcome of mans so called progress Now they arc victims of man cruelty at the mercy of his almighty should be kept in mind that these waterfowl were Imported lo Fairy Lake at In good faith That faith seems to have dwindled Over the years their have Increased Waterfowl arc starving and now complaints are loud about the cost of feed Winter Is approaching Humors or facf circulate about the rtam future of these poor creatures It is said that they will be destroyed Man is a loving beast Who should pay To me the same per sons who thought it such a kind gesture lo displace the fowl in the first place should be as gentle and loving of nature now Where the money comes from however is not us important as making sure food is provided Citizens have been asked to pay support figures in the millions via tax dollars for new town offices At the same lime displeasure is voiced at he cost of a mere pittance for food for the ducks Kill the ducks and save on the budget If lhc town see fit to allow funds for this purpose there Is no doubt in my mind that a canvass of the citizens could raise enough to provide a bird feed fund I would hope this to be unnecessary Remember someone wanted ducks In airy Lake they ask to starve at the hand of man Please can t someone feed the wildfowl Sincerely Moore More on Page B3 The Free Press Back Issues 20 years ago Taken from Issue of the Press of I95G Cracking Ihunder and drenching rain in two violent storms backed up vivid
