The Acton Free Press Wed December 196 In this age of automobiles the country dweller is even more dependent on wheels than city neighbor Rural people us ually have more vehicles lying around too Maybe they don t all work but the man of the house is going to get around to fix ing them one day or he waiting until they become tors items In the meantime there plenty of room behind the drive shed Stale and inch The country woman has at her disposal a great variety of wheels from Jeeps to pickups to tractors She never stuck for something to do the shopping in even if the manure spreader Is still hooked on behind I was once presented with a three ton dump truck for tootling around town A good friend used to drive an ancient stake truck She even took it supply teaching She looked as cute as a button all mini skirted blue eye shadow perched behind the wheel of her runabout Mack courted me in a 1948 International Harvester pickup called Jezebel It was held together with baling wire and scotch tape but it ran My father would shuddenngly request that Mack park his truck around the comer as close to the neighbors as possible Shiny all mine Two years ago I became the proud owner of a regular car Granted it was a Ford but to me it was as gorgeous as a brand new Thunderbird It had power steering brakes automata choke and a dash full of fancy knobs and dials No more opining the seat belt and diving half way across the cab to flip the heater from defrost to interior No more at stop lights when the choke skipped After nothing but jeeps and trucks I thought I had died and gone to heaven Mind you there were certain responsibilities that went along with my new car For one ng I had to keep it clean The yearly wash given the pickups was not enough for my dark blue beauty Mack admonished me to keep it full of gas and oil and gave me the key That sail there was to it No instruction booklet no rules and regulations for the female mcchan Nothing Being brought up in the era when played with dolls and learned how to make spaghetti sauce I t a clue what went on under the hood besides some I rather not know about thank you very much ft a Id Mack believe in maintenance for his fleet of Fords three Whenever I mentioned an obscure clunking in the vicinity of the radiator Mack would mutter someth ng about the fuel pump and wait till it breaks and we II get a This frequent phrase terrified me What if it broke while I was miles from home on the in rush hour Fortunately most things fell off within spitting distance of our friendly neighborhood Ford dealer However Mack still expected miracles of me and was constantly surprised when I let the car fall apart When brake warning light came on and I limped home convinced I was going to raci out of control down Ospnnge hill Mack scathingly inquired Don you ever check the brake fluid Brake fluid The day the power steering went on the car SO miles from home on the at rush hour Mack asked if I thought to top up the power steering fluid Mind you I did learn to check the oil myself and the first day I gaily out at the service station telling the chap I handle the dip stick I discovered I I know how to open the hood Tobkllhlt The gentlemen who sold me the car told me it would be good for two years I ve now had it two years and two months He was right The last two months have been a nightmare of problems Either I become well a qua in ted with engines and tran being confidently able to tell when the fifth piston from the left is out of sync Or I go bock to a horse and buggy Tomorrow I will spend the day polishing up the buggy and warning old Gypsy that she better not blow her exhaust on Main Street CVCA outlines facilitiesfor trail SOME GARAGES ON GREENORE Crescent are going to the dogs pair of
