8 The Acton Free Press Wed December 1 200 question 10 at MZB school Continued from Page Tom Hill mm Hill the incumbent mayor lives in Glen Hams He is a with Domtar He was on Es council and Is a former reeve and deputy The issue in this election is regional government Tom Hill told the crowd Regional government is the county system expanded to include some new areas of responsibility such as water sewers and a few more roads I think we have seen in the past three years that this system has not worked The region is too big and the south is too strong I believe we have to make our protest known to Queen Park We can offer revisions in Bill We can try to change the responsibility for the roads water and sewers back to the local municipal Last year In winter some of the roads were not plowed be cause they were regional roads the crews were working in Burlington and Oakvillc 1 ordered out our town crews We must make it clear to the province and to the regional authority that we will not tolerate that kind of treatment Many of you are upset by regional government I not happy with It either We will have to work on a private members bill in Queens Park Speaking of increased taxes he said we haven t done all that badly The majority of the increase has been because of education tax increases He pointed out he can make the position of mayor a full time one A town of can be administered and efficiently evenings and weekends Harry Levy Harry Levy has been a Georgetown resident for years he is employed as a comptroller He was a Georgetown councillor since 1969 and then elected to Hills Harry Levy wants to see that people in the north don t get the dirty end of the stick at regional level I am aware the people in Acton feel the same way about Halton Hills as Halton Hills feels about the region govern is being further removed from the people I have the reputation of being a man of action and that action is not confined to my own ward 1 have sup ported the three Acton councillors on items that affected the Acton area He explained he is a sports fan having originally set up the girls league and having organized and super vised the bantam hockey tournament which is mzed as the best of Its kind in the country He was active In Scouts and president of the district Scout Council for its first two years He is a life member of a vice club He wants amenities but not uncontrollable debt He said he had a large part For Halton Board of Education Word and turning back the arena rates He said originally he was the only member of council to oppose the principle of the proposed new municipal complex My perseverance and leadership paid off I will have all the time needed to devote to the task of being mayor he said Questions Mayoralty candidates answered a couple of ques tions from the floor More industry for Acton Hill Acton is in a better position than George town Highway is a big lever If there is a place for industry we can work on getting it into Acton Levy Since regional government one good thing is that the assessment base is not as important since it is all regional The Chamber of Commerce and local people should be going out looking for industry There is a lot of space that can be Input Both candidates said they favored input from local citizens committees in reply to a question Asked about the property taxation reform system Mayor Hill said since he had been ill he was not well versed in the matter Levy said it has far reaching applications basic ally it wont change the residential tax base much but industry and farmers will note a change But the farmer will be subsidized by the government its tricky Someone going to pay for it GW G Pat McKenzie has been the regional councillor for ward one for the first three years and official plan In council decided to give priority to the needs of local industry as opposed to new residential growth when the sewage plant is ex ponded he intends to support this policy He was initially opposed to the new administration com being built in George town and even more so to the other suggested alternative of one- tier government for Halton Initiate study He said he understands citizens are initiating a com study to re appraise the regional tern until this is done there should be no further central ization of services Church St improvements the swimming pool and arena Improvements have been undertaken and paid for out of the current operating budget under the former system we would have issued debentures He favors stronger area councils I abhor the possibility of onetier govern which would further weaken our local input am not tied to any em ployer or special interest group and free to devote all my time to this office He spoke of what he wants to see
