Governors at its regular December meeting The 145page report is the culmination of months of research by a special Status of Women Task Force headed by Wilkinson director of the Sheridan Centre for Women During that time more than questionnaires were completed by individuals both male and female in four specific areas of the col lege a dminis Ira live ad ministrative support fa culty and students In addition personal inter views were held with members of faculty and staff chosen on a random basis Other information included statistical data from the col leges personnel files and reports from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities recommendations The result is a list of recommendations for af firmative action in the areas of hiring and promotion salaries and fringe benefits appeal and grievance pro cedures on the- job training and development and sex stereotyping affecting both employees and students of the college The report and will be studied during the next three months by members of the boards operations committee The committee will then recommend an Affirmative Action Plan based on report to improve the status of women within both the college and the wider com munity The board of Sheridan College is firmly committed lo an equal opportunities policy said Pre sident John M Porter We will study Ihc Status of Women Report in detail Sheridan re examine carefully each of its recommendations and initiate valid policy changes action plans as this study progresses The Board of Governors has decided to distribute he report in its original draft form lo ensure validity and a more accurate response from faculty staff and students Copies soon Copies are now being produced for general distri bution and will be available at Ihe end of January through the office of Ihe President Sheridan was the first com munity college in Ontario to initiate a status of women report ft was begun in March Just prior lo ihc provincial governments an of affirmative action guidelines for women in Ihe colleges of applied arts and technology Those guidelines were the result of the governments own study of the status of women in post- secondary educational instil ulions The recommended the establishment of live action plans at every col lege to reduce sex stereo typing and ensure equal opportunity in hiring pro cedures salaries and upward mobility Many helpers officio members of the force Sheridan completes a decade of service SUSAN Lindsay Nelson won the Santa coloring Contest in the five to six years age group JUDY ARBIC Mowbray took the prize in the nine to ten age group the Santa Coloring Contest College President John Porter outlined college plans for its 10th Anniversary Year celebra tions at the monthly Board of Governors meeting last week The college will celebrate this event in April with a weekend of activities at the new Brampton Campus which opens for classes Jan The official opening of the campus Premier William Davis officiating will be held Friday April followed by a student alumni parly in the evening The college board staff and faculty will hold a dance on Saturday while members of Ihe public will be invited lo an open house tion Sunday April from 1 to Exciting In summarizing Sheridans history Porter said the first 10 years have been ex tremely exciting Sheridans objective to serve the whole community has been realized by its rapid growth and development From its modest beginning in September 1907 with full time students enrolled in programs the college has grown at an accelerated rate with more than students in programs Another are registered in community vites programs continuing education retraining and management development and training Looking ahead to Ihe few years Porter expects the imaginative spirit Christmas assembly look place he theme for this year v as Cabaret and assembly began with Grade 13 Cabaret dancers com plete with costumes The assembly included songs and dance by all the different classes and clubs at Acton High Once again Ihe famous Acton High School group The Angels made their debut singing in choir gowns The music group was Mirage This group ployed for students and were Sheridan College shows per cent of the graduates surveyed are on the job market Of these per cent found jobs related lo their program of study Sheridan 16 per cent are working in jobs unre lated lolhcirsludies while 15 per tent are still seeking employment The remaining per cent not on the job market consists of 11 per cent who are con their post secondary education plus per cent who are not looking for work for personal reasons travel or extended vacations Last August the college surveyed students representing per cent of last Mays graduates from all programs Students were sur veyed
