Bennett news by Tlton The new principal at our school seems be a pro mising one Mr is looking forward to being of a kindergarten to grade five level school It would be a new experience as he had been principals for schools with all public school grades He hopes that when the senior students are on longer with M Z Bennett that many sports and activities will be directed towards the smaller grades as now most of them are mainly pointed toward the senior end His first impression of our school was that it was quite large in size In his first two weeks here he knows all the staff members and hopes to know many of the students before the end of the year When dealing with the punishment of children he feels that one should be fair but firm but he Is always ready to talk to either a teacher or a student who has a problem or Idea which may be useful to the school Last Monday the speeches were held in the gymnasium All the speeches were very well written and contained a lot of thought The winner of the junior trophy was Lorl Epp and the winner of the intermediate trophy was Steve Saxon Congratulations to these two fine All the contestants received a gift certificate from the music store in Acton The girls basketball team Is doing very well and have managed to defeat B rook Me and Robert Little teams and are still going strong The boys on the other hand are trying hard but have been defeated in their past two both times Just four points behind the victorious teams The grade two had a sue bake sale on Thursday Just for the kindergartens to grade six classes Wednesday is Carnival day at school with such activities planned as an obstacle course the long ski race tug of war toboggan races and many more Grade will participate in the fun I The Acton Free Press Wednesday are now in the middle of Scout and Guide Week in Acton The week is celebrated nation wide in of Lord Baden Powell s birth day and that of his wife the Lady Baden Powell The Acton Wolf Cub pack held a sleepover at the Scout hall on Friday night They met at the hall about 30 and enjoyed games and a camp- fire They also had a chance to race their on the track leaders had built After mug up everyone went to bed If not asleep Head for woods Early Saturday morning the Cubs were awakened to the delicious smells of break fast on the stove After a hearty meal they all loaded their packs and headed for the wilderness Actually they went out to the Sixth Line where they cooked lunch They arrived back in Acton late Saturday afternoon much the worse for wear The pack Scouters would like to thank ail those wonderful parents who gave up their time to help out Meanwhile all the Beavers from both Acton colonies gathered at Farms at ten clock day morning The winter carnival began with at the farm The young lads enjoyed a ride on the Scouts Klondike sled being pulled by a snowmobile Everyone stopped for a good Scout type meal for lunch By three clock the boys and their snowball bruised leaders were going home It was a most enjoyable winter carnival On that same busy Satur day morning some Scouters and got together to tell Acton that this is Scout and Guide Week Thanks to Pete s Barber Shop we were able to erect a considerable display This year s theme Is Thanks for helping us grow Thank you The Acton District Guiders Guides and Brownies would like to take this time to thank the teachers of our Acton schools for their time and help with all the badge work that is done through the school The Acton Scout Association would also like to extend the same vote of thanks Scout and Guide Week was officially opened with Sun day Baden Powell Service Beavers Cubs Brownies Scouts Guides and Venturers gathered at the Acton Scout hail from which they mar ched up Main Street to the Knox Presbyterian Church We were welcomed by the Rev A McKenzic to his church The various colours were presented during the following hymn Two lessons were then read one by Guide Thesesa Conroy and Scout Frank McGralh read the other An address was given by Frank Patrick Religion In Life emblems were presented by the ministers to Andrew Ferguson and Sean McVeigh Heath Norton of the cubs and Melanie Johnstone of the Brownies All the sections then reaffirmed their promises The Rev Bon there then said a prayer followed by the Lord Prayer After the national anthem the Rev Father Jim Smye gave the benediction The groups were dismissed from the church The annual district church parade for all sections of the Scouts and Guides will be held this Sunday at two clock Parents may attend Everyone is to meet at the The girls worked on their Pack Holiday Jesters and Canada badges Our theme was Winter with Pat vander as Snovflake Heather Homer as Crystal and He Coleman as Rudolph Brownie groups were the Ookpiks Jenny McDonald Jackie Marie Lisa Caden head Jack Frosts were Lisa Toth Patterson Sherry Evans and Mitchell were Nancy Suzanne Thornton and Tracey Dun bar Cookie Day on May 7 The town s willing to pro Immersion Program this year came to speak to in teresled applicants for next year This Thursday the Harlem Diplomats Basketball Team will be performing at Acton High This team has all the glitter and comedy of the well known Harlem Globetrotters However at Acton High there will be an added comic effect the staff Our own talented basketball players will be taking on the Diplomats This event is County Sixty students will be attending from var schools in the county They will stay in French homes in Saint Brieve for ten days and go to school there for five After that they will j continue on to
