Baseball season swings into view Spring has come and summer meekly follows little choice in the matter With the summer comes baseball and there is plenty of It in Acton A welter of leagues and teams are getting ready for the upcoming season some of them earnestly competitive and others decidedly less so Minor The most popular is of course the minor league run this year by Glenn The league gives soft boll enthusiasts an organized outlet for their energy with over registrations this year so far More players are expected to sign up as they see friends involved There ore eight rep teams from the Acton M inor Softball Association playing in the rural league as well as eleven or twelve house league teams playing among themselves They are divided into boys and girls divisions The most serious compel lion is found in the rep teams They will play two games a week from the end of May to the first week of September playing one home and one away each week Home games are played at Prospect Park for the rep teams while house league teams will be playing at M Z Bennett School or at Sir Don aid Mann in Robert Little School 13 a third choice for the house leagues House league games are a Utile less serious than the rep earn games until the Field Day Playoffs and champion ships are decided then for all age groups in the league It rook v Hie selects Another of the highly competitive teams in the area are the Junior A Brookvillc selects Led by pitcher Sue Thomson they played their way to a third place finish in the All Ontario Tournament held in June last year Their strong record in the tournament is what placed them in the Provincial Women League Junior A division They play teams from Burlington Brampton Oak vllle Kitchener Georgetown and two Toronto teams Glen field and Bridle wood The schedule is over games long with home games being played at Brook school Miss Thomson predicts that the team will stand a good chance this year They nave lost only two players and have picked up a few new ones The other seriously com pelilive team Is the Rock wood Colonials playmg in the inter county fastball league They are a senior mens team playing a twentyeight game schedule starting May 15 plus playoff and mint action The team plays its home games in at the ball park and has an excellent chance of making the inlercounty play against such teams as I- Cam Sports Page ACTON ONTARIO WEDNESDAY APRIL 1977 One Hundred and Second Year No bndge and I ess competitive On a less competitive but no Soccer drops first exhibition Actons newest team the senior soccer team played their first game ever April 24 dropping a 1 decision to the Georgetown Meteors In a friendly exhibition game The team has decided to call itself the Acton Villa iltccn players arc allowed to dress for a game and Acton had out on Sunday team is made up of both Junior and senior players Sunday juniors were Gordon Bruce John and Tom John Smith Lee Robinson John Gibson and Kevin Weir Senior players were Keg McKnight Oscar Leal Bern i fryers Carl Fred Blaine Larry Nolan and player coach Colin Ilrcckenndge The team regular schedule will start May 11 and games will be played Wednesday nights less enthusiastic scale is the industrial league run by Ray Graham president and vicepresident Six teams will start their 15 game schedule on May 8 playing every Sunday after noon at Prospect Park Competition will probably be at about same intensity as the industrial hockey was the games are fun if you win that even better Mr says that it is hard to tell just how live the league will be It was tight last year between the first four teams This year half of our players are new Fun teams Mr is also involved with one of the many thor noncompetitive teams in the area He is helping run a ladies of all ages and sizes team which will play with teams from around the Churchill area and maybe ACTON REFEREES association hopes to squeeze this type of play out of Acton Minor Hockey games even a Georgetown team He emphasized that neither experience nor ability nor fierce competitive spirit were important In the selection of Hit team For more in formation call him Ref group looking for AMHA games has recently formed will be able to get Acton minor hockey games They are already looking after Legion minor hockey action and noncontact indus trial league play About people turned up for the organizational meet ing I thought it was a good turnout said People of all ages showed up with a lot of young kids The adults who showed up seemed to be the newcomers in town according lo Inscoe I he group is hoping to fund itself and may hold a draw to get a bit money to gel started By John Well the Maple Leafs lost which is exactly what they deserved This is not to say that I don t like the team but given the way they were coached and managed there was no way they could go a Coach Red Kelly s positive tons are just not enough to build a winning hockey team Some disciplined team hockey helps and it up to the coach to turn individual players team Kelly tdonethat The Leafs are up to their armpits In good players They probably have more individual talent than any other team in the league excepting of course Montreal It hard to argue with Dairy I Sittler Salmlng and Inge Hammerstrom to name Just a few of the Leafs stars With the proper guidance they would be winners Ballard circus may be lucrative fun for him but it is no way to run a professional hockey team If somebody had written the Leafs story up in a novel or movie it would be unbelievable Ballard operates the way Charles does but with less success that Is to say he is arbitrary egocentric and just plain nasty Team Cvuila Team Canada coach Johnny Wilson said a month ago that it was too early to call this year squad a second rate team because they t been seen In international competition yet Well they been seen in international competition now and it time to call them a second rate team I m sure they re all nice guys and good hockey players but they are certainly not representative of Canada best Their lackluster performance against Americans can be excused badasthisyearsTeamCanadais the Yanks are even worse and it s hard to get up for a bad team The Sweden game is another matter Canada was never in the game and didn deserve to be on the ice with the Swedes They were and outplayed way The eternal refrain it s the fault is making a tentative appearance in the series After Sundays 11 1 fiasco were careful to point out that Canada had played a lot of the game and that there were three times as many penalties for Canada as for the Russians The penalties came about because the Canadians don t know how lo play hockey without slashing and tripping and generally cheating whenever they can In a clear mismatch like Sunday game the penalties would not have changed anything other morale boosting trick is the old shots on goal routine They point out that Canada Sweden 114 in the first period of the game and pretend that this is proof that Canada was stilll in the game The shots on goal fallacy should have been discovered years ago when people noticed that the Russians were generally by an enormous percentage in each game That proves how much better we are we said Only problem was the Russians had a tendency towin a lot of games It easy run up shots on goal when you cross centre ice wind up and shoot The trick is to take shots that are likely lo go into the net Shots on goal stats don t win hockey games but goals do Sunday 11 1 drubbing hardly deserves comment More than one person has advanced the theory that we should call off the Stanley Cup playoffs give the thing to the Canadiens and send them over to Europe to show Vienna what wecan do Btnalaji Now that the Blue Jays have experienced the heady euphoria of success it s time for them and for their fans to face reality The odds are strikingly against the team finishing anywhere but last this year The long season will catch up with the Jays as their inexperience begins to show The surprisingly good of fens they have shown so far will drop off and their defence and pitching already suspect at best can only go downhill Baseball history is full of the stories of rookies making hot starts and fading In May 1G2 games makes for a long season and early per forma nee often means nothing I predict the team can look forward to a season most politely described as frustrating I don expect the team to match the antics of the rookie New York Mets who lost 120 games in their first year and lost them in style too but I t expect a whole lot more either In a very few years however the story will likely be different The Jays have a lot of young and talented players and a few years of major league baseball should Until then fans will have to grit their teeth and put up with an awful lot Trout Track on the mark for season to Acton high school students are gunning for Ihe Halton track cham this year starting with a meet this Thursday in Milton Among the team stronger contenders is Les Jones who recently placed twelfth in a runner field in the two in Mansfield Ohio who will be running distance events probably the 1500 metres and the Bob and Steven ire seen as promising prospects in the midget high jump as is Hick in thi midget javelin Deb James is ex peeled to do well in the girls discus throw having tied the school record in practice last week Most of the competitors ill be working for their personal bests Home meet The team holds one of its own it school even though there is no track vents ore measured out on field and run there This is the meet which is used to determine who will be sent to the champion ships held May 18 and 19 from the champion ships athletes move to the JAY MacFARLANE CLEARS the hurdle in High School track practice The team looks strongest in the sprints this year Leadership program Final application date put back one month regional finals and finally the All Ontario meet The Championship is normally a Peel meet but the Peel teachers work to action has forced the cancellation of any Ptel schools track activity Mr McLaren who is responsible for the sprints and hurdles has seen a fantastic amount of improve ment from when we started it told the Press Short season Because of the short season in high school track field there arc very few meets held So far the only pre meets the team has are the meet this Thursday and their own meet They had been invited lo compete in a Georgetown meet but the date conflicted with their own High School track teams often suffer because a lot of athletes in high school tend to work through local clubs rather than the school team because there is a better opportunity for competing with a club Clubs will generally run all year long whereas a school can operate a track program for a limited amount of time The team is practicing outdoors now in spite of the cool weather which we have had the last few They are out every day drilling to improve speed increase their endurance and perfect technique in procuration for the upcoming season RICK STANDS a good chance of doing well in the midget javelin
