The North Halton Contact Centre is in dire need of about 10 temporary homes in the Milton Georgetown and Acton areas for its Youth Home Placement Program a spokesman for the organization disclosed last week The spokesman who asked to remain anonymous said the goal of the program is to give parents and teenagers over a cooling off period while helping the family get back together again We don t try to lay the blame on either side the spokesman said We just talk to the kids and then parents in an effort to open the lines of communication This is the third year the Youth Home Placement Program has been in operation and so far the program has met pretty good success the spokesman said Sometimes all it takes is a phone call or a meeting with the family to make the kids realize the parents are human or vice versa thespokesman said Of course other times we are met with hostility because the parents feel are interfering but generally speaking the results of our program have been encouraging The spokesman said the received 52 requests for help from youths over the first year it was in operation and 27 requests were received during 1976 As of March another 12 requests for help had already been phoned into the Contact Centre and the spokesman expects this will be another busy year for the Youth Home Placement Program Right there are only five homes between Milton Georgetown and Acton offering tern porary refuge to troubled youths in the area but this number should be doubled for the program to continue along on a responsible level the spokesman said Youths are always checked out by the police school and public health authorities before being placed in anyone s home and our organization gets in touch with the parents to let them know where their child is he added And while those opening their homes as a temporary refuge for teenagers requesting help wont get rich the spokesman stressed all families involved the program will be com pensated either through Student Welfare or the Ontario Youth Division of the Red Cross Ideally there should be a group home established in the area for precisely the purpose of helping youths and their parents learn to get along with one another the spokesman said and we re looking into the possibility of this right now But in the meantime we are in dire need of private homes to help us accommodate the troubled youths in our program
