didnt excite Hal ton Hills planning board much last Tuesday A letter from Nor president lawyer Indicated his belief the town Is eager to have a driveIn built In the town and Joseph Shaw pro mised to enter negotiations with a driveIn operator to see one Is built providing the land Is industrial Planning board chairman Roy Booth said It was news to him the town was anxious to see a driveIn built and Councillor George Maltby suggested the developer be contacted and told the town so anxious to see a drive- in built Booth said he thought a drive- in was included In the presentation to the town and planner Mario Vendltti suggested Shaw might have got the Idea the town wants a from the Asbgrove drivein Ontario Municipal Board hearing The planner said at the hearing the town said the best place for a driveln is in in areas and the operator who wanted a drivein in Aahgrove to go down by Highway Vendltti said this sort of directed the Idea towards the development noted there is In dustiial space in Georgetown and Acton where a could be located Councillor Peter Pomeroy said he thought the letter simply stated the developer s intentions and the letter should be received and filed Planning board agreed Spmww BRUCE SHARLAND WAS one Milton craftsman who displayed his wares at the exhibition and sale of crafts in Acton Public Library He makes stained glass Build new library but not in park Georgetown needs a new library and It should be built anywhere but on valuable park land a small group of residents told Ward Four councillors Thursday night Less than W people turned out at the meeting at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena to voice their concerns to Word Four council members Peter Morris Mike Armstrong and Marilyn Scrjeontson Councillors Peter Pomeroy Miller and Walter also attended the later part of the meeting One resident said he was furious that council nip- flopped on the new library question just because a lot of people singed petitions against the site He said in light of the fact the town is going to grow to 000 people one new library with cultural facilities is badly needed The man thought the town has ade quate recreation facilities and wondered why council was shying away from a SI million library He said he dldn t think council actions so far regarding the library have been very businesslike The resident said he was willing to have higher taxes if he saw his money going towards more services and noted he had budgeted for higher taxes this year Morris said there are a lot of people who would just as soon see less services and lower taxes He noted a tural centre had been in eluded in the capital budget Armstrong said the town must operate with the current assessment until the new developments come on stream and start generating funds He said council can plan for a cultural centre but until the new tax revenue materializes It can be built He echoed Morris pointing out many residents cant afford higher taxes The residents charged council with dilly dallying with the new and old libraries and Cedarvale He warned if council docsn t start working towards enhancing the com unity all people will have when the population reaches 50 is a larger village He said it takes courage for council to make decisions Several residents sup ported the idea of Increasing use of debenturing but the councillors pointed out this would be difficult to do since recreation and cultural pro jects likely to receive Ontario Municipal Board debenture approval Morris and Armstrong both said council was only bring lng Cedarvale up to safe standards while she agreed with the resi dents but it was difficult to promote a million library at council when there much benefit for Wards One and Two She warned will wish facilities had been built now at cheaper prices than when the popu la t ion grows The idea of getting a developer to build the ties the town needs was pro posed by one resident but councillors thought this would be difficult to do unless the town approves an enormous development It was also pointed out that a developer wouldn t Rive facilities for nothing New home buyers would foot the bill Councillors emphasized the idea of a new library t been scrapped but council is now looking for a new site One woman said the tlon isn against a new library or expansion of the present library but simply the site She third of the residents who signed were from Ward Four Another woman said she had lived in a town where the library was in a park and it was great but she dldn care where it is as long as it is built Betsy George town librarian said 11000 people in llalton Hills use the two libraries not to mention the people who ore on family memberships or just use libraries for reference material Morris predicted use would probably double if the town had a nice library suggesting the present one isn t a plea place to go Councillors observed the town just doesn have any land left for a library Itcsl dents agreed suggesting land be purchased This would be hard to do since the approve recreation Pomeroy said the town may have to new ways of financing projects an maybe debenture hard services and use tax revenue for soft services Residents called tor a new library to be built but not on park land They felt George town have enough park land now LEILA ANDERSON AND Cathy of Georgetown demonstrate at the exhibition and sale of the next federal election Speaking to about 100 Lib eries the Holiday Inn In said the issue affecting Hal ton with at the Fed era level has to be the Go Train to Milton and urban transit He that while pro- grim had been shelved it was Tar from dead He said he had a letter from the the Prime Minster recently indicating that the matter was still very much attracted pub in national press when he led and in general the philosophy of the Liberal Party and what Lib eralism Is all about He said Canada hod en joyed good government under Liberal leadership but con ceded that even that wasn perfect It Is the Liberal party which the people of Canada have chosen as their govern throughout most of our history And by and large we have governed well As John Turner would say don t compare us to the almighty compare us to the alter natives He listed inflation jobs ripoffs bigness separatism foreign domination and apathy as problems the country faces As serious as they are these problems come and go to be replaced yet by others The issue as the prime minster said in 1974 and it Is just as true today Is leader ship During his seven page pre pared speech steered clear of any of the usual praise or accolades for Prime Minister Pierre Tru He was asked following the meeting if his speech could be interpreted as lack of support for and a possible preference for Turner to lead the Liberals In the future The Mp said he comment on who he d support in a leadership race at this time because he felt It would be distracting I dldn intend to give any Indication that I don support Prime Minister Trudeau There arc no divided loyal ties The present leader has my enthusiastic support But at the same time he acknowledged being a Turner fan Turner is an outstanding person I think we re lucky to have a choice of outstanding men It would be great to see Turner back in government again He said his speech was geared to talk about the rank and file members of the party Instead of the leaders and MPs We talk about ourselves often What I wanted to do was bring the people Into it Bayley Maclean Limited Realtor CAMPBELLVILLE COLONIAL BEAUTY Elevated brick on scenic as overlooking tree lined pond
