The Acton Free Press Wednesday Juh20 1977 Editorial Mr Hinton could refuse pay Bert Hinton thinks board of education members should serve without pay He has contributed many useful and thought provoking ideas during his months on the board but he loses credibility when he ex trustees to serve without remuneration If he himself wishes to serve without pay he could follow the example of others in the past who simply chose personally to serve without pay They did not accept the cheques Mr Hinton has rejected suggest ions he do the same He claims he can trust the board which he says is prone to wasting tax dollars He does not answer reporters who ask if he donates his pay to charity From the reporters point of view it appears Mr Hin tons reluctance to answer questions and back up his proposal with personal example leaves him open to picion of using the motion for pub licity purposes It was evident the motion would never pass as it was not even seconded Maybe some taxpayers do feel trustees are overpaid How many voters if fact know what their representative receives Board members are the stewards of over million and it is only reasonable to expect they would receive remuneration to make it worthwhile Premier can stop fiasco Ontario Hydro is up to its old tricks at hydro expropnation hearings in Acton refusing to di vulge information regarding a study on the Bruce to Essa corridor alternative suggested by the In terested Citizens Group This in spite of a Court of Appeal decision that alternative routes for the corridor must be examined Art an expert in land use and environmental planning the only witness produced by Hydro in the hearings said he believed the only study report on the alternative had been thrown out Hydro s lawyer Tom Marshall told the hearing that even if it existed he still wasnt going to pro duce the report on the grounds it isn relevant In fact Marshall said Hydro would produce no witnesses or documents relating to the alter native Leon the Windsor lawyer representing landowners from this area accused Hydro of conducting a cover up operation and stonewalling He also accused Hydro of avoiding the conse quences of the Court of Appeal decision Chairman Donald agreed He appealed to Hydro to provide the information Imagine having to appeal to Hydro to provide information to study alternatives the Supreme Court of Ontario has ruled are part and parcel of the Expropriation Act Obviously Ontario Hydro does not want people to know the truth of the matter since earlier Marshall admitted the Bruce to Essa power line alternative had never been seriously studied If there is no thing to hide Hydro shouldnt be worried about trotting any documents out for the inquiry to see It is the only way the inquiry can get at the truth of the reason why Ontario Hydro wants to avoid that sacred area of ground between Essa and Bruce As hearing Officer pointed out Hydro s refusal to call expert witnesses on the subject was going to make it impossible for the courts wishes to be carried out That is obviously what Hydro wants while they continue to steamroller their way through with a corridor that may cost millions of dollars more than it should It is time for the Ministry of Energy to step in and set matters straight instead of sitting in Toronto and issuing jubilant state ments about approvals for part of the corridor There are big clouds of suspicion hovenng over the necessity for the corridor at all If the Minister of Energy hasnt the intestinal fortitude to demand an investigation then Premier Davis might well assume the mantle of investigator and order a commission to study it independ of Hydro such as he did when his friends in and King townships were upset over the of the to Pickering corridor Things might go faster then instead of dragging through face- saving hearings and appeals which only serve to embarrass Hydro more and give citizens an oppor tunity to show their revulsion for tactics which should have gone in theiath century Georgetown Independent Of this and that Thursday July 7 marked an event which occurs only once in every eleven years one month and a day Thursday July the day month and women to sec what and why each other wis wearing Please don t get the iden that I down on weddings I think they are fine and 111 go down to the church on a nice summer djy with the best of them and get a prickling at the nape of my neck and reach over and hold the old lady s hand whin the parson intones for better and for worse in sickness and in health for richer and for poorer all that stuff galaxy than there are people on the earth The mind and heart arc staggered by this disclosure about the world of people and the world of things to which we belong To see the of the world of things and people could have a demoralizing effect upon us When I consider the stars what is man that you would ever give him a thought God But we have our place We are linked in wonder love and praise with all that is When we stand beneath the starry host at night we may Think Separation and feel dwarfed by It all or we may Think Link and experience ebb and flow of all creation passing Into our own heart Think link we are links in God chain Paul in his letter to the Ephesians says that in the body of Christ each piece is fitly jointed to the next piece Under His control all the different parts fit together There is more in the Bible about people becoming a perfect part than a perfect whole It Is our participation as a member of the body not our splendid development as Independent units that marks us as I stood at the corner day waiting for the light to change An inebriate wob bled up beside me and put his hand on my arm He smiled weakly and said It a wondcrfulday isntlf Just for a moment I experienced disgust I wanted to with draw But the disgust passed On second thought he looked so human He had a strong need to reach out cither because of his condition or In spite of it In that mo ment a link was forged The whole human problem was for me In Just a second or two Whenever we encounter humankind we will cither forge a link or establish a space Think Link it is a simple saying that reminds us that whenever we relate to others we may think In terms or binding or splicing or linking rather than in terms of breach or gap a rent split rift crack or separation Think Link Think link success WHAT S COLD white and smooth and isnt vanilla ice cream Can you remember The Editor Acton Free Press Acton Ont Dear or Madam Because I have just seen the spectacular success of the 5Day club activity recently 1 should like to share the information with your readers Children attended regularly In spite of the extremely humid weather and the llona of organized swimming periods They worked at studying their homework came of their own free will each day were lent and said Can It be longer than one week Parents also commented on their children Interest and study with plea sure and themselves returned to learn more Since few churches have Bible Vacation schools or even Sunday school in the days due to numerous reasons but mainly due to lack of interest I felt Sir that parents would be glad to hear of the club and In the future would support it by sen ding their children Children receive the equivalent of a Continued on page which caters to indigent daughters their husbands and any offspring they may have Nor did it bother me in the slightest that I hid to drive GOO miles round trip to sec my niece given away There was a torrential rain all the way there and heal a hangover from a magnificent recep tion ill the way home but that goes with the territory What I did mind just slightly now was frenzy of preparation during the three weeks before the wedding from the beginning I was aware that I was going to be stuck for a wedding dress one of those creations that women can wear once and never again unles they have some sense which most women don have when it comes to a wedding However I just shrugged this off You can take it with you no matter what route you choose to go But little did I realize that my wife was to do three things simultaneously create her own costume for the wedding lose 10 pounds and get a tan Just try it ladies She is one of those people who don know their own limitations demand perfection drive everyone around them straight out of his skull Since she started sewing a year or so ago she thinks she can tackle anything in the haute couture line I granted that she could whip out a golf skirt or pair of and knock off shirts for the midgets in the family while dishes were soaking but I was leery about her tangling with a wedding dress First week was sheer hell I told her to knock out a little white dress for the wedding and she came up with some old wives tale that you can t wear white to a wedding that reserved for the bride In addition the sun didn t shine for tanning and the diet seemed a dead loss Second week was a repeat But she did a panic trip to the city to buy material the sun shone for one day and she lost a pound and a half Third week The material she chose was raw Indian silk Great to work with Look at it sideways and it resembles a newspaper that been left out In the rain But the sun shone She stole a half hour a day from her 10hour sewing stint for sun bathing And suddenly the scales began to work instead of sticking as they had been for two weeks In the midst of it all so wound up about weddings are women she found time to dash out and buy me a pair of pants and a fine new white shirt I was going to wear my old gray flannels that I bought three years ago for and a clean golf shirt The pants are a bit lumpy around the pockets from carrying keys in change and golf balls and the shirt has a cigarette bum In the collar but otherwise re fine There was no way she was going to get shoes so she said 1 could wear my hush puppies and she d say I forgot my dress shoes Not only did she finish a real of a skirt with a matching vest but a polka dot blouse to go under it New shoes or course a tan and believe it or not a brand new figure with almost 15 pounds vanished Into thin air She was a knock out Why don t women put all this creativity and willpower Into something besides a wedding Free Press Back Issues 10 years ago Token from the Issue of the Press of Wednesday July 10 1967 Four
