Sabres shuffle look for better season The Junior B Sabres will be sporting a new look when they return to the ice this season Their new uniforms modelled after the New York Islanders arc only the most visible aspect of the dif ferencc There are changes In staff as well Fred Buchanan has been moved from manager to player personnel director which includes recruiting new players while Bill Campbell has taken over Buchanan s position as manager According to Sabres president Milt Ball Buchanan had trouble getting along with refs but had a good rapport with the players Sheila Buchanan has been named public relations tor The biggest difference will be in the lack of a single major sponsor The team is Instead selling season tickets at a price of each and hoping to sell 1 tickets or one to every six people in Acton It might be an unreasonable figure but that our target said Campbell Half revenue The sale of 1 tickets would provide about half the revenue needed to run the team The rest of the money will come from extra gate ad revenue from their program and Ihe booster club Hills furniture has donate V for a raffle to generate income Ball and Campbell point out that a season ticket costing 10 for games means ad mission is about cents a game Where can you find any cheaper entertainment asked Ball There are no other teams in the league that are trying to survive solely on fan support the way the Sabres are so there is no to follow The team is on its own in this venture One rcison for the move was the difficulty of finding a sponsor to put up that much money At at five or six people were approached according to Campbell and hi eels that the poor record of last year wis par responsible for the re luctance of potential span I ve no doubt it had some bearing Squirts undefeated Halton rural champs Pop Main prediction proved correct as the Drive In squirt girls picked up their tenth and eleventh wins last week without a loss to finish on the top of the Rural League Last year the girls were playoff champs and the year before that they were the league and playoff vie tors The squirts outlasted Milton it in a sluggers duel for number ten They hit seven in the game Kim White Sally and Chanttc each mailing two and Debbie Lumber and Dawson getting the others Milton homered six times but t to put enough runs across the plate to best winning pitcher Kim White The team broke out for runs in the third inning to put the game on ice Win number marked the return of ace pitcher Theresa Dunn who hurled the team to a drubbing of Hornby July Theresa collected strikeouts in her victory while her teammates sup ported her with Susan Tufford led the onslaught with three round trippers followed by Dawson with two Jody Brown and Robin with one each I rord squirt boys made sorry they ever met by defeating them twice during the week by scores of 10 l and 13 Canary pitched both piling up 13 whiffs in the first and nine in the second The Acton attack was led by first Steve who homered once in game Bruce Canary Brian Roach also homered for the squirts made It exciting in the second game forcing Acton to come back bit with 10 runs in the last inning to the win The team batted the order sending 13 liters to the plate in the inning Rhys and Steve Rune each crossed the plate twice during the rally Nellis Construction atoms split pair of one run decisions edging Hornby on July 19 but dropping a decision to Glen Willi July 21 David and Kevin Lobsmger combined strike out in the Hornby gome The Horns from 12 free pusses in the garni five of whieh resulted in runs Kevin and Kevin Brown homered for the winners in the Tuesday imc jumped out with three run in the first inning held back late inning rally atoms to keep the eame Kevin pitched well but wis victimised a of pusses followed gopher bill to Glen pitcher Jon Only four Glen reached base iflcr the first inning not to m ike up the deficit Nobody used it as a direct excuse The main reason given was that money was light Takes of r worry The team is still interested in a sponsor if they can get one It takes a lot of worry off you for sure said Campbell He admits that without a sponsor there would be a lot less politics involved in running the team It asking a lot of a person toask him to sponsor a team according to Campbell It was tremendous to have Joe backing these last few years Die team is hoping for a good sale of tickets to give them money to work with but they realize that people may be turned off for the reason sponsors were that the learns per form last year left some thing be desired if the team is proved over last year and coach Bruce Chapman is sure it will be t won t be obvious until the season is underway Tickets will still be avail up i point said Ball be really pushing them Organization he feels there is good chance the team will be improved Last year were disorganized having just made Ihi jump lo Junior ll but this they ire pre re I Training starts third it coach Chapman topics Rinch every Monday Wednesday and ruh We won t iste ice time in conditioning Mil do it in Ihcir own or it imp Campbell he is going to con emirate on loc players provided Iheir iltitudc is right according to Ball There always been an tude around town that if you re from Acton you II make It It doesn t always work that way said Camp bell The team has got letters from two Toronto area players interested in Joining Ihe club Camp will tell us a lot We certainly expect the local people to be there Chapman the man Chapman Is the man the executive picked to do the job of turning the last place Sabres into a respectable club this season According to Campbell the team is going to start with discipline but make it enjoyable With the type of person Bruce Chap man is It can be possible said Campbell If anybody he can added Ball Chapman was at a few of the games at the end of last season and it Is not going too far lo say that the only time they learned anything cording to Campbell Last year there were two coaches Dave who quit in January and Dave Del papa who finished the season invitations Invitations to the camp have been sent lo players but everybody who thinks he can make the team is wel come to come out according to Campbell There is a puck shooting range weight lifting equipment cross country running field hockey pitch and swimming pool to help get players into condition before the team goes on the ice which they hope will be August 22 The executive expects the team to finish much better than it did last year The im proved organization Is one reason and the age of the play is another They were a young club last year and now have a year of ex perlenee to Ball The team is aiming to reach the playoffs this year Six of the eight teams in the league make the playoffs The Acton Free Press Wednesday July PAGE Industrial softball Electricians wired win twice last week Hills edged up on the mark another pair of wins this week sweeping JT leaner 13 Payne loses uy Payne was the losing pitcher in Thursday s game as he struck out only one By John Skateboarding a popular topic for sports writers in Ontario Every sports section In every newspaper in Ontario has run stories about Ihe skateboard boom recently so I might as well doit too When first there were no plastic wheels or boards with autographs of world champion skateboarders on them There were boards for sale but nobody bought them A skateboard was what happened when you took apart a skate you hadn used since you were six anywayandnatledittothebottomofatwoby four Doing It any other way was definitely not kosher It like getting a gocart any way other than stealing a baby carriage without taking the baby and nailing the axles onto boards which were nailed Into other boards with a wooden box on top and away you went and who needs brakes or steering anyway Boards were not hot on fancy stunts but we tried about how skateboards worked too They v notorious for their lack of manoeuverabillty If you v good enough to nail the two halves of the skate on in a straight line the board would go straight and precious little else If you dldn get the two pieces of roller skate on right the board didn go anywhere Needless to say there was not a whole lot of trick riding done A In those days was when you went head over In spite of the faulty equipment we managed to do a little Our only course was a downhill run into a parking lot across the street There were arrows painted on the ramps and these made up our slalom course There were some jumping events too but they mainly Involved diving for safety were seldom If ever premeditated The fad mercifully died out before whole generation of boys broke their bodies beyond repair The it was reborn in California of course home of the and the San An Fault coming back bigger than ever with fat thane wheels models costing more than and even pink boards Pink In my youlh no guy in his right mind would have been caught dead on a pink anything We wouldn t even drink pink lemonade Now pink boards the rage Boards bounds growing with every new skateboarder Any lost macho Involved In a pink skateboard is made up for in the stunts being done now Skateboarding is a baby sport both In terms of how long It a been around and In its relation to surfing lis spiritual parent Because it Is such a young sport it Is growing everyday as new participants come along to push the limits of the board further and fur ther The difficult stunt of this month will be child play next month The huge skateboarding wave will pass but the organizations built up around It will stay and with them hard core of skateboarders Eventually it may become a real sport instead of the fad it Is now and who knows Maybe In Olympics will
