team from Kitchener in the first round of roundrobin playoffs They faced the same team again last night See next weeks paper for results Jock Tock Industrial race tightens teams enter home stretch By John Bottomley Statistics are mushrooming faster than major league salaries Has anyone out there in readerland noticed the proliferation of trivial statistics which the major leagues are keeping nowadays I have I watched one batter step up to the plate in Mondays game between Pittsburgh and Chicago and was duly in formed that the mans batting average so far this season was around 3l8orso That was fine Iknewhewasagood hitter After the first pitch I learned some Important new information The man is batting against this par ticular pitcher in the course of his batting career A second pitch went by and to my surprise I found out another new thing Three new things In one day is a bit much for me but nonetheless I found out that this batter still the same one Is batting with runners in scoring position Mercifully the man got a hit or an out or something and themadflowofstatsstopped have been laid his batting average against Scorplos with an ascendent moon his average against lefthanded fastball pitchers In nationally televised games and maybe even his slugging percentage different from his batting average against Catholics when Howard Cosell was announcing the game Statisticians an overworked lot if ever there was such a thing This Is no Isolated case and I am not sure how they manage to come up with such a barrage of statistics to cover such a range of situations Somewhere in the depths of America must toll thousands of overworked statisticians wllh horrid pale complexions who cant spell what they do but who have a genius for the invention of new categories and new areas into which to thrust their computered visages One can image the scene ten rooms each filled with ten rows of ten desks each At each sits a balding man with no shoulders and large slobbery lips with which he Is con stantly licking his pencil poring through game sheets to discover just how many hits the third string third baseman of the Toronto Blue Jays has had In the middle Innings of Friday games when the opposing pitcher has been Cuban In between the rows walk men with cat tails ten to remind the slavish statisticians of their devotion to and dependence on the decimal system pushing them on and on to new and lower heights In the science of stats Steinberg If you dont get moving well never have dose figures ready for tonights game If dose results arent on the supers desk in tirty minutes youll be out on the street In thirtyone minutes point seven Tour percent of my threats result in da firing of da Victim so move It The New Statistics would need the New Math to follow them When I was young and happy kids used to memorize stats on their favourite players Some could tell you day by day the batting averages of every player on the home team These mini Elnsteins of my youth would be lost in todays maze of numbers Can you imagine a nine year old trying to remember all the statistics which the statisticians have deemed important enough to collect in the first place It would take months for our hypothetical child to figure out the Importance of most of them much less memorize them Disraeli Benjamin once very much like there are three types of lies lies damn lies and statistics And each worse than the last I might add If old Ben didnt do so himself A statistic can be made to say anything it likes and with each subdivision and new category we move farther and farther into meaninglessness Why play in a baseball organization Speaking of baseball I wondered recently why the Acton Minor Baseball Association calls itself this when they dont play baseball at all They play as we all know and softball is not baseball I asked Pop Main about this last week and he told me that the association used to play baseball but at one point a new executive came In which didnt know anything about baseball and switched the organization over If that Is the only reason for the switch I would recommend a return to the original baseball With two Canadian teams In the major leagues now supposedly looking for Canadian talent outside the realm of pitching we should be trying to foster Canadian talent Softball games wont teach anyone how to play baseball because the balls behave differently Hitting a Is much easier In general than hitting a baseball A hardball moves faster and the game has more action I dont see any real reason why hardball should not be returned to Acton It is no more unsafe to play than soft- ball Is and young players wanting to emulate Slue Jays will probably feel closer to their dream if they are playing the same guys TMtul tala One thing I forgot to mention In last weeks opus about leeball wax the possible proposed by Pop He said be could see a season of half teeball and ball pitched ball This would give the tykes a chance to learn the rock bottom basics which shouldnt take a whole season and move on to face a pitcher too It could be worth a try A 3 tie between second place Sports and third place Hills Catering prevented the Sportsmen from moving into first place in the Industrial softball race last Week as the leading Vans squad dropped a 144 shocker to Station Hotel The Caterers needed a single run in the final inning to tie and they got it on hits by Ray Graham and Vince Thornton while Avery reached base on an error by Larry Bryan Lawrence and Frank Daley were the pitchers In the game the Hotel team scoreless until the last inning when John Dunn crossed the plate Gary Wilson and Ed Hllller were the run in the first inning for Station Jim Cole was the high scorer for JT and he did it without getting a single hit Walked twice he was antra Family Cleaners shrunk Electric down to size with close victory in Sundays first game The Electricians hod been winning everything in sight but fell short Sunday as they were missing most of their players Players from other teams filled in the gaps for the Electricians and kept the game from forfeit The Cleaners scored three runs in the
