Sports Page ACTON ONTARIO WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 1977 Hundred and Third No Second Section Sabres fall 42 to Blades victim of Beehive comeback Sabres were close last week but never close enough as they dropped a 42 decision to Oakville Wednes day at the arena and fell victim to a last period ex plosion Friday to come out on the short end of on count against Dixie Sabres had taken a lead early in the third period against Beehives thanks largely to a superb game in nets by Robin Inscoe who faced 30 shots in the first two periods Sabres as a team executed their game plan well for the first two periods each unit trying to cut down by a single goal against while still going for the first goal of the game They did get the first goal as Mark took ad vantage of a powerplay sit to pot one from Rob Mllllcan and Doug Elliott before two minutes were up Sabres managed to overcome their usual slow start in the game and would have taken a 32 lead out of the period If Beehives had not found an opportunity when Acton was two men short Tied up As It was the Sabres were tied at three all at the buzzer Schinkel scored his second rifling a shot that Blades net Jock Took By John Bottomley Fans cant see when home team cheats I have finally become convinced of something I used to merely suspect without ever considering that it was really possible Fans seem to be stricken with sudden and inexplicable blindness whenever their team commits an infraction against the rules I had long known that whenever the home team loses it is the referees fault Any true loyal fan will tell you and the ref too that this Is so and in no uncertain terms That is a long way removed however from being actually unable to see penalties earned by your team At Fridays Sabre game for instance Bud Buchanan came skating in towards the boards where I was standing raised his elbow and did a number on his Dixie opponent Twice because he caught him on the rebound too The referee promptly called elbowing as he should and an immediate howl of protest went up from the gentleman behind me He was standing no more than ten feet from the play and yet it seemed he could not see it These same people who operate in braille where the home team is concerned quickly learn to use radar when peering at the other side The bad guys are always doing bad things to us according to our fan and old four eyes can see them as clearly as if they had happened This does not happen for Sabre games only It Is even worse in minor hockey contests In the end nobody Is happy with the referee They all feel he has deliberately not called the visitors for their obvious and heinous criminal offences while picking up on every little thing the good guys might happen to do in retaliation for the abuse they have been taking I dont think that is quite a fair assessment of the situation on the fans part What ac tually happens is that the being only human makes some mistakes or calls a game too tight or too loose but he does it for or to both teams equally His errors and misjudgements when they do occur usually balance out over the course of the game so both teams benefit or suffer equally Two Acton schools deserve congratulations McKenzieSmith and Acton High School both deserve recognition for their per formances over the last sports season cKenzieSmith built up a juggernaut field hockey crew that rolled undefeated to the North Halton championships an incredible feat for a school In Its first year of existence The middle school also managed a third place finish out of their girls volleyball team and a fourth place from the boyB Acton High School girls team after a hesitant start got rolling In time to upset league leader OakvUleTrafalgar In the first round of playoff action and went on to the finals In Halton action All three teams did well in their leagues Congratulations to them and lets hope the rest of the sports year goes as well minder Gary Davis could only partially block as It rolled past him into the net Peter who has been playing on a line with Chapman and McGilloway continued his hot play of the last few weeks as he scored off a faceoff from Chapman for Acton s third point The second period was marked by rising tempers as the second place Beehives began to get frustrated by their lack of success against a last place team they felt they should be handling with ease The Sabres kept their cool and it paid off Gary Davis was handed a high sticking penalty when he used his stick to remove from the crease and while the Blades were short Chapman rifled one In from the right side as was just getting himself out of the net where he had slid ef destroying Davis chance to block the shot Chapman ended the scoring In the period on a breakaway Seconds earlier he had been thwarted on his rush by Davis and this time he waited a little longer deklng Davis out of the net and dumping It In with ease Bruni and Schinkel shared assists on both Chap man markers Upset Before half a minute had passed in the third period McGilloway popped in a powerplay goal from Bruni and it looked like an upset was In the works but the Bee hives poured it on as they literally blew through the team according to Bruce Chapman He added They capitalized on our laUt of de fensive personnel The Dixie attack which had been smoother all game finally took over as they scored three times In just over two minutes Beehives added the insurance marker on a with Buch anan off for elbowing Draw praise Sabres drew praise from the Oakville Blades coach Eric Smith after Wednes day 4 2 loss Comparing the Sabres with last year a team ho said You can tell we re in a hockey game this year Sabres have a much better attitude move the puck well and are well disciplined Both Smith and Chapman gave credit to Blades net minder nee Vantresca I ve got to commend their goalie said Chapman We would have beaten them The play was In their end I just don t know how he managed to stop some of those shots had some gym nastlc saves of his own in the contest gloving a shot from Todd which had bounced off his pads and was still headed into the net Blades took a lead in the first as Sabres once again started slow first Blade goal came after some scrambling in front of the net as Inouye finally put it past Mllllcan closed the gap to l with his second goal of the season taking the rubber from Dave and Scott Malcolm for the score Goal came late In the second period Sabres the Blades 14 in the final period but could only manage a single goal Chapman did the shooting on the point while Mark Schinkel and Peter added assists Sabres pulled netminder Kent Moffatt with seconds to go when Blades Brian Marvel broke loose with the puck More than one Sabre tossed his stick at the streaking Blade and the officials awarded him the goal Coach Chapman made some line changes day switching Kelly Mc Arthur for Dave McGilloway on their respective lines and he was pleased with the results Kelly gave more zip to the midget line he said and Dave McGilloway seemed to complement Peter and Dave Chapman Chap man also put Brad Buchanan up on offence to save his knee from some of the pounding It takes on defence and Buchanan was good enough that he will stay there if he comes bock well from the operation he la having for the broken kneecap Sabre shorts Sabres are playing without the high scoring forward Brian Walker who left the team In the middle of the October 30 under Mike Kinal leagui team i IS IS 2 I IS IS tin Burlington its IS is 17 Milton a 10 It BUD BUCHANAN has been playing on offence the last two games and has impressed coach Bruce Chapman with his play game in Brampton As coach Chapman said I made one line change substituting Peter Wicklum for Walker on the Chapman line Peter un dressed and went home This was the second time he had walked out on the team The first time come after he was disciplined by Chapman for drinking before a game That Incident was kept quiet and Walker eventually returned to talk things over He has not come back this time and Doug Elliot Is now wearing his sweater Jeff Shields who played quite well for the Sabres early in the season has chosen to do his
