Official opening Tuesday for new high school Acton Free Press Wednesday Nov 30 1977 The cutting of a red ribbon officially signalled the opening of the new Acton district high school Tuesday night The scissors were wielded by the Hon Tom Wells the Minister of Education backed by a throng of applauding plat form guests including students teachers school board members administrators and clergy Over thronged into the impressive new for the dedication ceremonies and appropriate speeches After the program ap preciative crowds fanned out throughout the school where happy students had set up displays and were at work on projects Much praise was expressed by the visitors The school has been in the planning stage for two and a half years and under con struct Ion for 18 months Its design was greatly influenced by the staff members themselves working with the architect Don Blenkhorne In his welcoming address to the crowd principal Dean Fink spoke of the years of education since the high school was first housed in its own building the old stone school in He spoke of the changes since then and the tremendous demands on schools He referred to the areas of the new school saying weve come a long way number of schools A hundred ago when a new school was built b people themselves its opening would be a cause for rejoicing Half a century ago a textbook would cost cents A male teacher would receive a year a female teacher lot Then as now we think the preparation of our people so important we are willing to pay much lor schools and for teachers The school prepares people as well as possible for their future in this democratic sjs tern not just for a job or unnersit to be happy or to learn to live together It is all those things together Young people will have to be prepared to cope with tre mendous change As well as the basics they must learn a lot more will learn about this country its values and history The will develop a sense of self worth learn to work together learn eternal values Speaking of criticism most of it unjustified he urged more optimism have a first rate educational system in this county and you are to be congratulated The future longs to the voung people will be the
