6 The Acton Free Press Wednesday De Student area at high school by Jennifer Many of the different areas in the new high school have been covered this year in the paper Since schools are for students an important area would be on where ihey can sit and relax during free periods and socialize with fellow classmates Acton high is fortunate to have an area like this It is known as the bearpit and Is a carpeted spot in the centre of the concourse in the new school It has a bright and comfortable atmosphere with orangetone carpet and a sky light roof which allows sunshine to enter The bearpit was carefully planned so It would be in an area that was central in the school but not able to disturb classes It is located outside he cafeteria just across from the locker bays with exits to academic areas along the outside of the Since September the bear pit has provided students with an enjoyable friendly place to socialize discuss home work play music and even sing For Remembrance it was decorated with symbols of war that reminded dents of the true meaning of Remembrance Janet Beck a resident artist was able to use the bearpit to speak to and help interested students with weaving projects The Christmas spirit has taken over the bearpit and a Christmas tree brightly covered in lights is now decorating the area Students feel the bearpit is a very necessary part of the new school Most find it comfortable and relaxing without teachers having to hassle out of the halls It a our area where we can talk with friends and get together McLaren vice feels the has greatly improved school and teacher relations Teachers no longer have to get after students in the hall for standing around and disturbing classes Mr McLaren remarked that the new school has a more relaxed friendly at mosphere He remembered one incident where a grade student said to him You know teachers are almost human With a more positive feel ing between staff and dents things can only get belter Yvonne This week there were only three leaders for the Fourth Acton Brownie pack so we divided the Brownies into three groups Each group was to be tested on O Canada and God Save I of the Brownies passed After testing we did a small craft consisting of many RICKY BARNABY danced for joy when he got a toy radio from Santa at the Beardmore party Joyce Munkacsi at St Josephs Another new teacher to Acton is Mrs Joyce Munkacsi at St Josephs Catholic school She is teaching grades one and two Mrs Is from and lived in Georgetown before coming to Acton during the summer She lives In Acton with her husband and two children both of whom attend St Josephs Mrs Munkacsi attended teachers college in Hamilton and taught in Georgetown at Holy Cross before joining the staff at St Joseph She enjoys doing knitting and during her spare time Mrs Munkacsi says she loves Acton and enjoys teaching at St Josephs STUDENTS RELAX and enjoy themselves in the high schools bearpit The area is also appropriately decorated for
