Sports Page ACTON ONTARIO WEDNESDAY JANUARY 11 1978 One Hundred and Third Year No 28 Second Section Sabres suffer single frame lapses as Chevys and Beehives triumph Sabres are not doing any better at the job of playing three periods of hockey a game They gave up five goals in the middle frame to lose to Brampton Wed and then allowed nine In the second period against Dixie Thursday to a defeat The Brampton game was a big disappointment accord to coach Bruce Chapman The Chevys were operating under a new coach who had not even seen them play in practice yet and the Sabres had hoped to pick up two points in the ensuing Unfortunately for them the Chevys confusion only served to confuse the Sabres according to Chapman He called the loss the Sabres worst hour of the season including the two losses to Strectsvllle Flu strikes The team has been suffer Irom the flu and a few injuries Jim Cortwrlght has been out sick and just came back Monday Mike Major is just back from a bout with the flu and John suffered a shoulder separation last week critically undcrman the Sabres defensive corps The team is back full strength now and Chapman is but were unable to hold thing which should not occur had winter begone bring back baseball season Relax sports fans all this cold weather is just a front Baseball season is actually un derway which means this weather will not last forever Industrial Softball has begun to plan and the Acton Merchants who were representing Acton in tourneys around the area last year intend to join a Georgetown league Their own tourney which had such bad luck last year is being scheduled for June this year This should help them avoid the biggest problems they faced which were in order the weather and the fall fair Acton Merchants home games will be played Monday nights under the lights at Prospect Park Scheduling work has begun for the Acton Minor Baseball Association Pop Main reports that coaches and managers are being asked to reserve time on the diamonds already Even the Blue Jays are getting ready for summer again Hespeler major bantams should clean up their act Major bantams have played their third fiasco of a hockey game this year with Hespeler and feeling on the team is running high Manager Bob Leopard told me he would really like to see the Hespeler team out of minor hockey If his report of the game is accurate then I have to wonder if maybe he isnt right The team and fans seem to have taken entirely the wrong view of minor hockey Any parent who can harass a boy in the penalty box and encourage their own sons to do the same as parents were doing should not be able to face himself in the mirror the next morning This is the third time the Hespeler team has played Acton and all three games have been excellent examples of how not to play a game All three went to nearly two hours to complete thanks to the number of penalties and the attitude of the Hespeler team on the ice It is not the players fault the games turn out the way they do It is the minor hockey system that nurtured them that is to blame If the men and women running the system think so much of winning they will ignore the OMHAs ob jectives of sportsmanship and good com petition then it is no wonder the players come out the same What a contrast that game provides to the juveniles exhibition series In Sarnla The two teams got together after the games and went to a restaurant and together on Saturday night At the arena organizers of the series handed out jacket patches with the words Good sports today good citizens tomorrow The only unpleasant part of the weekend was the drive home It sounds as if could learn a lot from their counterparts in Chapman and Mark Schlnkel to put the Sabres back in the game although was Just a temporary situation Sabres accounted for only IS minutes In penalties while the ran up minutes Better game The game against Dixie was a belter game in Bruce Chapman a opinion The big asset was the return of Rob back from a slon It shows what a big fellow can do in a physical game Because the team was coach Chapman was double shifting Dave Chapman and juggling lines to to keep Dixie off bal a nee It worked for two periods out of three but the second sunk the game The Sabres fell behind only in the first period but gave up six goals in the first half of the second they got on the Chapman broke the ice with a marker from Scott Malcolm and Peter Art added a second from Chapman and and Wade Vickery pumped one in from Currie and Malcolm to end the Sabres scoring In the period Sabres Dixie in the final frame on goals from Vickery Chapman and Milllcan Mlllican went through four Beehive defensemen for his goal He also assisted on Ihe other two points of the period both coming on Malcolm also picked up assists on the markers by Vickery and Chapman while and Chapman got assists on point Coach Chapman alternated goalies for the two games with Dunbar playing the first game and Inscoe the second Sabres again came out on top in the penalty depart taking minutes to the Beehives Sabres have two games this week as they face Burlington away Friday and come home to meet the Blades Saturday Sabre scoring Chapman Malcolm Brunt Elliott Barnes Major J Vickery Buchanan Withers Dunbar 20 30 28 12 10 Bants win two more top Elora and Fergus SABRES PUSHED THEIR Dixie opponents for two of the three periods they played but let up in the second to allow nine goals through Scott Malcolm and Wade Vickery work around the bluelne for control of the puck Both had good games against the Beehives Thursday Next Acton minor bantams continued to dominate Well ington Waterloo play with a pair of wins this week tripling 3 and edging Fergus 10 took a lead out of the first period of their January 6 game played at the arena but that was the last goal Tim Baker let through as the bants tied it in the second and won the game in the final frame Tim Ferguson blasted one In to knot the score In the middle frame getting the puck from Rick Greenly and Tim for the point- Evans netted the winner early in the third period from Greenly Ferguson poured In his second of the game from Mark Duval and lony for the clincher He took advantage of a game misconduct penalty which left Elora for much of the third period The Fergus goalie was res ponsible for keeping the score close in the Acton Fergus contest played the next day as Acton controlled the play raott at Tim Baker was again In nets for Acton turning aside all Fergus efforts for the shutout The game was a lie until there were only three minutes left to play when Mark Duval powered in an unassisted marker Juves in silver stick after successful series in Sarnia Gold DancB medal for Cindy McGilloway 17 Acton juveniles qualified for the silver stick through some excellent hockey over the weekend as they topped Sunday after lying them Saturday The juveniles were playing a two- game exhibition series The Sarnla team they played is the team which represents the city in play supports two juvenile teams one of which plays league games for Ihcm Samia had a 2 lead in the third period but Jeff Shields fired home a penalty shot that really lifted the guys cording to manager Mike Kino Less Ihan a minute after he connected Bill Manes popped In the lying point from Art Currie Tom opened the scoring with five minutes left in the first period getting the puck from Weir for the score lied it up before the period ended and went up by one midway through the second period brought the juves back even as he converted passes from Mike and Bruce McPhail Major bantams are harassed by Hespeler hockey parents Major bantam manager Bob Leopard would like to see out of the because of the play they have exhibited In games with Acton all season long The last meeting between the two teams was January and the 45 minute game took over two hours to complete as have both previous en counters between these two teams Derek Hodgson had to taken to hospital In Gait after the gome and according to Leopard two other boys should have been taken to the hospital as well He says parents of some of his players do not want their playing In again He also felt the rcfcrcelng was unfair saying The referees were so unreal it Is hard to describe He said that Hespeler parents who numbered about 60 were harassing Acton players in the penally box but It was the Acton parents a total of four who were the ones asked by the to keep quiet out would really like to see out of minor hockey said Leopard I who claims they have been re- ACTON SABRES JUST couldnt seem to score when they travelled to Brampton last Wednesday Kelly McArthur tries his luck on the Bramp ton avail as Logan Chevys topped Sabres handily moved from other leagues won game with three last period goals Denis scored unassisted in the first period to give Acton their only lead of the game went in front before the close of the frame but Randy Smith lied it up with the second solo effort of the night for the bants After the third marker Kirton came back for his sec of the night this one com from Gary Lumbers Mike Marshall connected in the final period from Paul Campbell but the bants could not manage any more Uncommon The roughness of the game Is not characteristic of Acton gomes In a January gome with New Hamburg which ended In a tie Ihe referees marked on the sheets Good Clean Game Acton was busy this week as they also faced Elmira dropping a decision In Denis Kirton wb again the big gun for the bants picking up two goals Gary Lumbers and Ron Jackson also scored for the bants all In the first frame After building up the lead they allowed to struggle back with two goals in the second and two in the third Randy Smith Ray Mueller Dave Mitchell Derek son and Gary Lumbers all earned assists Two quick goals followed before he period ended setting the stage for the final period comeback Eight different players figured in the scoring in the game for Acton Acton were penalized for nine minors while Sarmo was hit for eight Acton come out the next day determined not to settle for a tic and after an Initial goal by Sarnla they put In four unanswered goals in a row to take a commanding lead Two of these goals came within a minute and a half of each other at the close of the first per Kevin Weir netted the first one with assists from Terry Winters and Shields Shields put the next one In himself getting assists from Winters and The only goal of the second frame went to from Bill Manes and Randy Van made It Acton on a solo effort In the first mfnulo of the third period added two points to make the game close but Manes and Shields put it out of reach with a pair of goals to close the scoring Manes got an assist from and Shields was fed by Kolln This was another good team effort by the as nine different players were in the scoring column For the first time Acton has a figure skating Gold Dance medallist Cindy 17 passed her last Gold Dance Saturday She
