Our readers write Straighten out post office Focus concern Alberta Reunion The Acton Free Press Wednesday Jan 11 S To Dr Frank Dear Phllbrook We read with Interest your letter to the local newspapers stating your stand on the recent strike and I wish to add my own personal postscript Like most people was appalled at the audacity of the handful or inconsiderate workers and even more concerned by reports of vandalism and theft following the settlement of the strike vandalism of the postal depot In Toronto and theft of mall It was brought home to me even more when we received two item of mail on the Toronto area on December 2 and December Enclosed Is one of the originally holding a cheque for small won by my young daughter at the Royal Winter Fair As can sec the letter has obi been slit open to examine the size of cheque It hud been taped shut by the post of die and the stamp reading damaged at depot and repaired applied The other sticker saying virtually the same thing wasoppliedtoaporcel of books ordered as Christmas presents and arriving so damaged some of the books were unusable as gifts The end had been ripped outa considerable feat as the professional packaging was excellent The books were bent and dirty and the whole package looked If it had been run over by a ten ton truck Is this the way the Royal Mall treats parcels or were we victims of the wildcat vandalism Reports from friends indicate they also received parcels very laic and smashed to smithereens If the perpetrators of this violence are punished will we then be subjected to an other strike in protest What do we do if we cant trust the mall system in a country where all major ser vices arc controlled by monopoly Isn t there some way lo get this clement out of the system Or are we going to to go the route Britain has suffered the past decade Thank you for letting me add my bit and I trust you will do oil you can at Ottawa to straighten this situation out Yours truly Jennifer Ban- Copy to the Acton Free Press Appreciation to our priests Dear Editor In looking over some of my old memories I came across a Christmas card from the late V J Morgan that said God bless you this Christmas day And keep you in his care Then grant you peace happiness And answer priycr Which I thought was typical of his life is a priest in he parish of Acton for 30odd years to care for iU needs and answer the problems of the people as Ihey arose from day to day on the job he never failed to give you his best advice He always liked to have a chat or discuss whatever subject you had In mind He left behind him the memories of long service to this parish that will live in the history of the church The life of a priest calls for great patience and understanding When I came to Acton first tin late rather McGrcavcy was parish priest fine man also On holidays of obligation we would attend mass at in the morning go home and have breakfast and be on the job at ready to start our day work at the tannery These were the days when self sacrifice was part of our life This practice dwindled and died out in the Church authority lessened home and family life suffered a setback and gradually reached the goal of women lib Modesty and obedience he day under mining the virtues of a sound marriage Today the sacrament of marriage is no longer looked upon as a bond between man wife for want of patience and derstanding In bear with one another and remain a unit of respect and love as the good Lord intended ft to be So to conclude I will have to finish this comment with the late Father McBride who also served in this parish a jolly and humorous priest always in a good mood with an object to visit most of his parishioners and keep in touch with church affairs and to show his Interest in their spiritual welfare He was well liked to all in the parish As Father is the fourth in my day I believe he will please the parishioners The Editor Acton Free Press Dear Madam Two columns In the Free Press of January A my attention because they were of independent origin but shared the same timely concerns One was Bill Smiley regular column and the other Frank Phllbrook letter titled World Population Crisis I liked Smiley s general plea for straight forward and positive responses to political economic and racial problems and his specific stance for racial understanding I could also relate to concerns about Third World responsibilities with res to population control However our Hal ton left unsaid some politically unpopular facts about equally Important responsibilities of the developed countries to be less prodigal con of food and energy Before Canadians can pose as credible critics of birthrates in thepoorer countries we must significantly reduce our per capita consumption rates India may have a birth rate that is twice that of a western country but rich countries with quarter of the world population eat more than half of the world food What s more we use much or the grain in inefficient ways million ions enough food forall the people in India and China to fatten form animals February to Ih is set aside as TEN DAYS FOR WORLD DEVELOP MENT and the theme this year is FOOD There will be events in Acton during this period to focus on related to the disparities of food distribution in our diminishing planet TEN DAYS FOR WORLD DEVELOP is joint educational program of the Anglican Lutheran Presbyterian and United Churches of Canada It seeks to bring about Canadian public policy which will broaden the opportunities for human growth especially by the people of developing countries Yours sincerely Comfort of Acton for many years as a priest of good understanding with a social and humble manner A priest life is not an easy one so let fl give them our utmost encouragement to curry on in the service of God for his parishioners spiritual welfare in this new 1978 Yours sincerely George Graham Dear Editor A reunion to celebrate the Con School a
