Candy factory busy with Easter orders MARY FUNK has been hand dipping chocolate confections at the Schneider Candy Factory Rockwood for the last 25 years JEAN GIVEN is a 30 year employee of the Schneider s Candy Factory Here she weighs some jelly beans one of her year round duties byB Easter Is less than two weeks away Nobody knows this better than the six employees of the Schneiders Candy Factory who are now In their busiest season Grand children and even great grandchildren of J H Sen who founded the com pany over years ago pitch in and give the family bus a hand getting the chocolate rabbits hens ducks and clowns to market On the factory s upper floor where the ladies ore wearing blue buttons saying Apprentice Easter Bunny work begins in January to have the products ready for spring These Easter confections are unique because they are handmade from pure choco late In the tin molds remem bcred for years The molds each have their special names Including Mr and Mrs Chic Grandma and Grandpa Dutch and Girl and Boy There are bunnies of all sizes with baskets in pairs hopping driving cars or riding scooters The choloate is melted over hot water and the molds are hand filled by the long lenced workers The chocolate sticks to the side of the mold and the shape Is formed The form then hardens taking anywhere from minutes de pending on the weather The chocolate sets faster on colder days The molds are undipped and then the de lightful animals are decor ated again by experienced hands Weighing pricing and wrapping finish the process The family business oper ates year round Frank Schneider la the the trade he learned from his father Brother Clarence is the company s salesman and purchasing agent and sister Shirley is the book keeper and girl Friday Lately she has been busy decorating the Easter pro ducts Shirley says that her Dad was the real candy decorating artist He begins making his tiny flowers Immediately following Easter for the next years trade their way towards medals from the Canadian Ski Association Teacher Bob Love ex plained that he and 14year old Brad Billings started cross country skiing to school back in early December Both lived on the Second Line of After Christmas five other students from the same area put their Christ mas presents to good use and joined the pair Ages range from nine Co 14 not including the teacher Mr Love is first on the route and is joined by the others They cover part of the Conservation area walk along the Ice on the River for a piece through the bush and across lvo farmers they have permission Brad Billings has earned his gold medal as he has skied a total of kilo meters For his age group he only had to ski 400 kms to recelvetheaward The rest of the group are working on their bronze which for both under the baton of Wally Gallagher It was the first time that the Centennial School Auditorium had held such a musical evening The aud ience of all ages responded with enthusiasm to the lively marches familiar show music and the classical com posers arrangements The School Bands are made up of grade seven students who started lessons at the beginning of this school year They could gain only
