The Biblical flood OUR READERS WRITE Unrest in civil service Dear Sir only hope Frank knows more about the human body and its tunc lions than he knows about politics and Ihe public service Biggest Bang for our Buck April 15 Phllbrookwantstocontrolthefcderal bureaucracy by freezing hiring in the civil service a nice political gimmick a motherhood issue bound to get votes The fact is the freeze is already on Civil servants are being laid off or not replaced The statistics look good because they do not show the private outside contractors that are being given healthy contracts do the work formerly done by civil servants As for the dismissal of incompetent civil servants I wish we had such legislation for politicians Dr here shows his ignorance of the private and public sector A civil vant can be fired much easier than a union memberin the private sector Trade unions in the private sector are much more mill tant and protective of their members than are their civil service counterpart Of course everything Is not right in the civil service There is definite unrest and with good reason A good example is designation A designated person cannot strike That sounds fairly reasonable to the general public Prison guards federal fire fighters etc comes to your mind but do you agree that as in a recent legal the people who tended the Governor Generals greenhouses should be designate I can cite many instances of such abuses The civil service does Just that Provide a service It can be compared to an army in its size and structure If an army doesn win battles you do not fire the troops You fire the Generals William A Johnson mm David Estrin Environmental ft Energy Law Humane and courageous The Editor of Acton Free Press Acton Ont Dear Editor Through the Free Press I would like to express my feelings to our Citizens of the Year the Firefighters Their voluntary services are most humane and courageous Today I heard the fire siren and through the window I watched some of those men running and running up the hill to get into their cars and I won dered praying for them all Thank you Truly yours Mrs M Rodriguez Churchill S Acton How to motivate kids The following letter is in reply to Jen nlfer Barr comments about children in her Dear Mrs Yes Maam we do have a guaranteed way to get children to do their chores willingly with or without a smile WITHOUT BEING ASKED In fact Im trying desperately to find a way to stop them I always maintained that if I could have one wish it would be to have someone follow me around and pick up after me Now that Steve our 13yearold has granted my wish I not so sure I really want everything lucked away so tidily that dont know where anything is Ive actually had to call him out of class at school to ask him where he put my glasses and my shoes so I could leave the house fully dressed Now I suppose you want to know the secret of my success Simple Don do It yourself You may have to wallow in a lot of muck fora while but sooner or later the offspring are going to enquire Why cant wo have a nice tidy house like Mrs Jones and Mrs Smith And you will answer we can dear if you want to do it Secret Number Is a little more com plicated but equally effective Dad who rules with a little more Iron thumb than Mom categorizes all the duties and lists them according to priority The list goes up on the family bulletin board where every one can see it Incidentally if you dont have a bulletin board get one All the mechanical and electrical chores are assigned to Geoff our electronic wizard The crafty type assignments such as woodworking furniture repair and out door duties are listed under JIM who excels In that field And Mr Clean gets stuck with the household stuff like washing windows They are listed In order of paying and paying jobs Naturally the kids break their backs gelling the paying Jobs done first Sowehavetoaddaslipulallonthatno money Is forthcoming until all duties are completed The next category lists all the volunteer tasks with the price beside It Naturally the dirty oven goes to the highest bidder Is finished In record time At times it is wise when listing the oven fridge and toilet cleanups to pin the cash to the list This way they trip over each other to complete the task and collect Now Mom you and Dad arc free to assist and advise but dont boss and under no circumstances must you ever finish an incompleted chore Otherwise youve lost the game Speaking of games Introduce the work in a fun way make them think theyre having fun and you 11 get far more work out of them As our initial agreement I absolutely refuse lo take any responsibility for the care and feeding of the dog cat or fish They also do their own washing ironing and mending Otherwise they have nothing Yes we do have our fair share of bowls and squalls floods and breakages But we dont see or hear anything Just make sure that your floors and carpets come in all the latest hues of peanut butter ketchup mustard grape juice and hot chocolate That way nobody will know If anything gets spilled Never invade the privacy of weir bedrooms nor even suggest that they clean them Just pin up the list and go away and leave them alone Of course if youre lucky enough to have a Mr Clean In your brood he will do the vacuuming keep floor scrubbed and polished put everything away where you may never find It again until you move and keep his big brothers posted on their turns to wash the dishes cook the meal and scrub the bathrooms He also sees that Mom keeps all her junk in her own private office or the bedroom then carefully closes the doors so no one can see who has messiest quarters In the house Having a lazy mother has made our kids kind of special Even to serving my tea in bed in the mornings No they are not for sale but we will hire them out for a price It Doesnt Feel Like a Small Car The new MoreDoor GLC Its got more of everything that makes the GLCs such Great Little Cars More glass for their banks it seems a reasonable time of year to speculate about the greatest flood of all Was the deluge of the Bible for real or Is It Just a fanciful story On the whole the geological and archaeological evidence for the storys being based on a real flood Is very strong In Sir Leonard led an ex pedltlon into the valley of the rivers Tigris and Euphrates in what is now Iran Near the site of the ancient city of Ur he discovered a low mound strewn with flint implements and fragments of pottery Woolley dug Into it and found a layer of mud with painted pottery and other artifacts embedded in it Beneath was a clean water- laid clay and deeper still was a deposit containing Stone Age implements During the next four years found this sequence repeated almost everywhere he dug and gradually he came to realize that the water laid clay was evidence of a vast indundatlon that destroyed the stone age settlements receded and left the fertile soils that later civilizations were built on This flood of course was not a universal one it was confined to the valley of the two rivers But it became a central fact In the minds of the people who lived there Several stories were written of flood and all that have survived show a close parallel with the Biblical story There is always a good faithful man who is warned by the gods to build a boat against family and the game and beasts of the field The rest of humanity is drowned As the waters recede he sends out a dove a swallow and a raven and when the raven Tails to return he knows it is safe to emerge He steps out on a mountain top and pours a libation to the gods Later the story was retold In Greece as Deucalions Flood Later still It became part of the Hebrew Bible In which form it entered our own cultural and religious heritage In the six hundredth year of Noahs life in the second month the seventeenth day of the month the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up and the windows of heaven were And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights Thr Acton Press Your Community Marketplace Dial to Budget Yourself with These Food Buys OceanKing 7ozTin I of60 REDSOCKEYE OP I TEA BAGS SALMON Mitchells
