were visible shining through a haze of smoke white In the corner by the fire exit bright yellow flames flickered In the windows When 1 arrived Firefighters were already on the job and entering the Town Haiti heard the sound of water pouring down Into the room behind the Council Chamber The stairways and upstairs hall were filled with smoke and a number of citizens standing around upstairs watching the proceedings By this time the stove had plunged through the floor into Jimmy room below and firemen were pouring water on the wood around the place the stove had been on the floor and walls and down the hole in the floor onto the stove below Most of the excitement was over by then and the story of the night s events was being passed along from person to person among the spectators Jimmy hod decided because of the cold that one of the stoves should be kept going all night so the hall would be warm first thing in the morning for the students He had therefore loaded some wood into the stove in the northeast corner and gone to bed But the stove burned better than he realized or perhaps he forgot to close the damper in any case It must have become so hot the wood around it ignited This wood was piled a foot or so away from the stove and the behind the stove and the floor underneath were covered with galvanized metal If this been the case the fire could have been much worse The stove must have been very hot Indeed Jimmy had been awakened by the smelt of smoke and the sound of the fire He rushed out and pulled the fire siren switch but nothing happened The siren was frozen He have a few tugs on the bell rope grabbed a pail filled It with water and raced upstairs to throw It on tho fire On the way down he pulled the rope a couple of times again filled the pail tugged the rope and raced upstairs This accounted for the intermittent clanging of the bell He kept at it running up and down stairs in his stockinged feet in the smoke until the firefighters arrived Undoubtedly his efforts helped to hold the fire back The stove eventually came down through the hall floor onto his bed so it was lucky he wakened when he did This fire ended his career as caretaker of the Halt His roam was destroyed and there was no other one In the hall so he moved elsewhere eventually becoming night watchman at Baxter Laboratories and later at Dills Printing and Publishing I Jobs are very boring Mr Speaker these jobs are also very well paid Sometimes automation is blamed and at other times autocratic management But surely these difficulties could be resolved peacefully In other situations they are Workers blame the the cabinet and the various postmasters general over ihe years for lack of co operation Even the civil vants In department are blamed The workers in turn arc accused of being com anarchists rotislsandsoon This does not seem to solve the problem They propose certain solutions of their own establishment a private enterprise a Crown corporation andsoon The question now is Can we gel cooperallon by agree ment or shall we have to re sort to tough measures I believe Canadians are a reasonable people They want to treat everyone welt in eluding these Inside postal workers But they want these issues resolved soon After all this department is not a toy factory even though there are a lot of games being played It Is on service and the public wants
