Halton 4H News P C BOB ANDREWS toured Acton schools last week as prt of police week activities He lectured in and answered questions from the audience about police work Police week message received by students Working Together to Pre- Speyside and vent Crime this year Police where he spoke to the week theme was heard loud and clear by Acton area school students last week Beginning Monday Police Constable Bob Andrews visit by Carol and Chris Baglnskl The Music festival was held today at Z Bennett school We had en tries in the grade six A choir triple duet triple trio grade seven and eight S A choir and he boys changed voice choir We thank Miss and Mr and all the students who worked so hard to represent our school Our school relay team competed at Sheridan College on Tuesday afternoon Miss and Mr Boycott coached our team and we were well represented On day the grade six assembly had two of our local Police officers to speak to them It was a very active and enlightening presentation students in an informal dis cussion principal Norm Howell felt that students tend to think of the Police as a formal uniformed and the students learned a considerable amount about the law and the dangers of our present daj society The question period was very well filled A special thanks to our local police for their great support The grade six classes are at present planning a historical walk through Acton They hope to view the pioneer cemetery early buildings and other factors of our past Our graduation graduates of arc selling doll tickets this week to help raise money for their banquet and program The first prize is a pair of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls with a baby doll as second prize The graduates wish to thank Mrs Gorton for making and donating these lovely dolls We appreciate her kind generosity Robert Little news by Janet Kris and Brenda Bosaert The grade three classes have been doing pioneer baking Recipes have in cluded bran muffins apple cake oatmeal cookies and bottom of the cupboard cookies The children enjoyed sampling the results of their efforts A new map has come into our library It is a world map and is now in use by the students It is now time for the Canada skills for our upcoming summer camp The Hostess committee wrote Invitations to all the families for our closing night picnic on June 12 We discussed the necessary Items and the reason for them to be carried In our backpacks for our hike on Saturday Fourth Acton Brownies by Linda Widish The Acton Youth hall was the scene of many smiling faces on Tuesday May The girls of the fourth Acton pack Invited their Mothers to our fun night We played a few games such as the Gallant ship Hot Potato Treasure Maze and others We all sat In a large circle on the floor to sing songs such as The Railroad song I wish I Were and Come All Ye Brownies The mothers enjoyed playing Lost Night saw a Ghost A buffet was set up so that everyone could help them selves to a few goodies run standing long Jump and speed sit Everyone Is doing well in this program The health hustle is going great Almost everyone knows the dances now Three pitch baseball is also going well Here are the scores girls Canadians Islanders Leafs Rangers 12 Expos and Blue Jays 16 Boys results are Tigers 1 Bears Wolves Coyotes 1 Lions 5 and Cubs Robert Little and arc going to be twinned Mr Ciglen our vice- principal is going to be viceprincipal of both schools but his office will be at Speyside Mr Alien our will be principal of schools with his office at Robert Little The Rotary thon came out successfully Robert Little earned Congratulations to those who participated Grade three and four are looking forward to a trip to Hamilton Place to see the Wizard of Oz Have a good trip group rather than people Visits like this expose a whole new side of the police to the pupils On Wednesday Constable Andrews time was divided between Robert L ttlc and St Joseph school Question and answer periods in each clas3 room took up most of his lime However the Constable was still able to take part in the health hustle rout no at Robert Little One of the high 1 ghls of the visit to Robert Little and Josephs was visit by safety officer Con stable Swaminalhan and the talking cruiser Principal Gory felt lhat the officer was able to relate to the students and so they spoke quite openly with him on Thursday at Constable Andrews was more like a public relations person work with the students and creating a positive feeling between the two part The idea of Police Week is cer a step in the right direction at the grade six to eight school ranged from the duties of the police and the role in today society to the handling of phone calls directed at girls In the Acton area Grade six students at had recently been doing a community study and so information on the role of the police in the community fell right in line with their projects Students and staff at Z Bennett enjoyed Constable Andrews company for a full day on Friday He was kept busy all day while visiting each class for a discussion with students The kinder gartcn class was Instructed in finger print Identification and each had their finger print done A noon hour baseball game with the junior students and Constable Andrews the teachers demon strated once again to students that police officers are human Relating to the students on their level helped to understand how important it Is for the police and public to work together All the principals agreed that a positive and relaxed encounter between students and the police arc Important In developing the last meeting and took roll call All were present Ruth Gillies moved that the minutes of the meeting be adopted as read seconded by Jamie Richard- Holly talked of what the sheep club had done at Milton Fair last year All members had agreed that a scrap book would be made Ellen and Heidi Stadler were chosen to do the scrap book The information section will be done by Richard Stanley and Jamie Richardson Doug Gardhouse an we would be going to the University of to sec how meat is cut on June He also mentioned that the County Judging Competition is to be held the laBt part of June We also talked about the C E Judging CompeU tlon Later a ram was taken out and Doug showed us what to look for on a good lamb We judged two classes of lambs Dorset giving reasons on both classes Holly thanked Mr Hunter for letting us use his farm Mrs Hunter gave us and chocolate milk Joe Weeden closed the meeting TRACTOR CLUB By David The second meeting of the by GlHUs Constable Bob Andrews visited our school as one of the Police Week ac tivities At noon Constable Andrews along with several Junior division pupils played a game versus nine teachers The teachers won the game by a score of to 5 On Wednesday May 31 we will be having a Track and Field day for the Junior pupils It will be a lot of fun The winners will go on to the North Halton Track meet Tractor Club was held at Brooks Farm Ser vice Llmehouse on Wednes day May President John opened the meeting with the pledge and the minutes of the last meeting were read Murray and Bill took an alternator opart and showed the parts and how
