Acton Women f or the anniversary During the past seventy five years the Acton Women Inslilutc have experienced many accomplishments due to the many ardent members who have worked so faithfully down through the years The Acton Women a Institute was formed on March 1903 when Mrs JohnR Kennedy became the first president and Mrs John Cameron was made the first secretary treasurer This meeting was held in Hill Hall and later meetings were held in members homes Our motto being For Home and Country has always been kept in the foreground and many projects have been realized through our organization During two world wars members gave much time and latent to the needs of our soldiers serving overseas In early years much effort was put into producing old time concerts and plays which patronized in Acton At one time a drinking fountain was Installed In front of former post office This was later moved to the comer of the We had a permanent refreshment booth built in Prospect Park and during the years the members have worked together serving lunches and dinners on Acton Fall Fair Day Many fair board Directors look forward to the Women Institute dinners In connection with the Halton Musical Festival our branch donated a shield and have always helped dally towards the musical training among our school children When the new addition to the Public school was bulk we presented a trophy cabinet which was in front hall The trophy cabinet was built by Mr One of our big undertakings was planning a new entrance for Cemetery Stone pillars were built by the late Mr Augustus Clifford An iron arch with Cemelery Inscribed in metal letters spans the two pillars On the left pillar Is a bronze tablet Inscribing the date These gates are a tribute to Acton Women s Institute Throughout the years making quilts has been a real hobby among our members Many tickets on our quilt last year were sold from a booth we had at the Acton Fall Fair Our members always take pride in preparing an exhibit for Ihe air Dona lions have always been sent to tho Cancer Society the Crippled Children Society and to other organizations which we feel will benefit from our help I know many more Hems of I must say we are very grateful to have the privilege of holding our monthly meetings in the Isabel Watson room of the Acton Centennial Library In appreciation we donated a baltery run clock for use in this room We have lost many valuable members through out the years and since our membership Is getting smaller and we are growing older we find it difficult to do the great work which Is ex peeled of us but we the faith few will endeavour to carry on and have courage to face ihe future Greetings from Ireland for WI anniversary Twenty members and met in the Isabel Watson room of the
