The Acton Free Press Wednesday July 5 1978 Canada Day celebrations an overwhelming success by Winifred Smith Canada Day July 1 1978 will long be remembered by the Community of as its citizens including whole families young and old came out to honor Canada on Its tilth birthday Those taking part in the parade met at the community centre around 1 1 am There seemed to be dozens of bicycles with those in charge from the tiny tots to the teen age group All were decorated mostly in red while and blue colors with a Canadian flag securely fastened on each waving in the breeze The parade started the short distance from the hall to Burnetts field about 11 I ending the way in the parade were several girls from the Georgetown Girls Pipe Band hollowing them was the open lop Oldsmobile car nicely decorated with garden flowers arranged and placed on the back and front of the car by Bob A liree placard bearing the crest was placed at the back of he car also Hiding in the car was Erin Township councillor Jo Schneider Then came the children riding their bikes There a couple of floats As no parade is complete without a clown I O Connor dressed for the occasion walked along beside thebicycks one a push up the grades to keep things on he move By twelve clock at Burnetts the opening ceremonies bcan Ivan Bird member of hall board welcomed all to the festivities and called on councillor Jo Schneider to officially open the notions birthday party Paul Schwartz led in the sinking of Canada Ivan Bird hen called on Mrs Burnett to come forward and accept a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the hall board and the community just to show their appreciation for the use of their properly and the exln work involved to this day possible The lunch booth run by members of the C and the I w is well patronized is was the ice and soft drink counter run by mem of hill board There was a craft shop an antique disphy bargain counter on the grounds In the sports events some thing had been arranged to please everybody like horse THE BALLOONS tell it all Terry Foster four Georgetown and s Canada Day shoe pitching ball games and a lugo war competition The races were planned to suit all ages In the far corner of the grounds there was a fish pond for kiddies and a hot dog stand The dunking machine caused a lot of fun Thcrt were some pretty good sports who did not mind being aimed at one In particular being councillor Schneider Mrs stayed for the whole afternoon proceed participated In many of the sports The Community Centre boird art to be congratulated for the success of the day It meant many hours of work It was well as each member was designated to do a particular job and to be sure they would feel that their efforts were ap preciated when they saw so many local residents present Many were weiring the illinafad sweaters which proudly displayed the Ballinifad crest which Bob designed Shortly the trophies were presented the closing ceremonies took place Following Is a
