professional days For the second time this year Board of Hon will be asked to reduce its teachers professional activity days Thursday following review by trustees of an I rati on report on profession a activity days member Jim on he will ask the board to trim the number of professional days ram nine to seven at the September board meeting Clelland proposed cut would take effect this year In presenting his report Superintendent of Instruction John noted there was just no way to do a cost- benefit study on professional activity days as the board asked He observed over million In wages are spent paying the teachers for those nine days but elimination of the activity days save any money since the teachers would then be in class leaching and still getting paid Boich said he and his col leagues in the senior dm in is ration still believe the board gets good value for activity days but there is no way to prove it A survey of principals showed teachers spend a lot of time doing administration work on professional activity days especially high school teachers a lime on curriculum and even less lime on professional develop ment Trustee Fred complained the report t deal enough with Ihe I rem en cost to the board for professional activity days and observed the public will support these days children t in class only If are helping teachers improve in theclassroom sure new administration methods could be found so teachers doing ad ministrative chores on professional activity days The public and the board needs to know it professional activity days arc as valuable educationally as days when students are in school since so much is spent on wages for those nine days Pointing out over half of public school teachers are In the highest pay brocket because of Iheir experience and qualifications wondered why ihey were out of the class any days and needing any professional development Boich noted there are more school days in Ontario than in provinces and states so the nine days werent really lost from teaching children and make the teachers better He said the same as other highly qualified professionals in industry teachers need professional lime lo learn new methods and skills To give teachers time for classroom administrative duties is no reason to cancel classes veteran Trustee Judy Alexander declared She said activity days are supposed to afford and secondary school teachers the chance lo gel together and move closer towards integration of the two panels noted elementary teachers work about hours and secondary school teachers hours on activity days and won dered why when a report tabled earlier this year said teachers are working an average of hours a day She suggested if teachers worked from until on professional days then ihey would have more time for profess ion development I still don how students can benefit from having per cent less instr uc lion year Trustee Noel Cooper dekared He said consultants and to should be doinfi professional development with during lunch hours and after classes Boich said the admin is assumes inservice training and professional development improve per formance in the classroom but con t prove it with feels and figures Superintendent of Program Bruce Mather noted he board core curriculum weighs pounds and going over that lakes he teachers so professional activity are needed Professional activity days are an annoying and eon issue Trustee Bill Herd declared adding there is an obvious lack of profes development on those nine days so where is the hem fit students the number of profession days should be cut lo seven his school year he on thaie should be on professional development with being done at other times TOM SHANNON clutches his first prize Buff Cochin rooster
