Grandma goes hunting shoots bear moose Some children brag about their grandma but few can brag about their grannies prowess at bear hunting like little Brian of Beatrice Beat Is a year old grandmother who is loaded for bear and has shot at least five In the last years She has shot her share of deer and moose as well when she and her husband BUI go on canoeing trips In their golden years of retirement this couple canoeing on placid small lakes as an afternoon outing They go on complete cam ping portaging and canoeing trips in the wild north country On their last trip they started at Cochrane and canoed to Moosonee carrying supplies and tent with them Eden Mills as they portaged over the wild country Not content with roughing It the couple then skin the animals Mrs Howes scrapes the hide and makes shorten Ing from the fat and freezes the meat Bill helps her stretch the hides which they sell at the North Bay fur action If it happens to be deer they tan the hide them selves and keep It for their own What a nice woman like this doing shooting animals and rapids at the same time The Hawes lived in George town as many of the family still do then farmed in Erin before moving up north Bill Hawes kept an eye out for forest fires from the toll towers frequently seen In movies during the summer In the wintertime he trapped around Matachewan where they lived When airplanes started patrolling for forest fires the towers were closed and Bill job with them A year ago he retired and now he and his wife Beat live with their son and his family on the Sixth Line north of Highway Some of the activity has rubbed off on son Ed who builds canoes for a hobby But the lure of the north is still there and the outdoor life is in their blood so off they go Age is no deterrent to the active couple who obtain maps of Northern Ontario Canoe Trips from the govern ment and take off Us hard to beat Beat and Bill who in their 60s have more initiative and energy than many year olds December busy month for Community Club by MacDougnl Mr and Mrs Eric and Mr and Mrs Russell recently spent a weekend in the border towns of New York State Mrs Anna Wilson presided at the meeting
