The Acton Free Press Wednesday Nov This year is Ihe Anniversary of the Royal Winter Fair and I had the fun of showing the country s largest agricultural exhibition to my mother for the first time I been several times as per usual during the past two weeks trying find local people who will suffer the indignity of my camera I always feel embarrassed asking busy exhibitors coping with unsettled livestock and several million school kids poking at their prize bulls to pause and pose for a picture And they are lys so very nice ibout it at least most of them are However Wednesday last I met my mother living in his country again and currently visiting Toronto at the Colhscum to show her my next fill fair is my favorite The Royal is same only better The show is magnificent a tribute to it some organizers and it John Moles Of course the animals steal the show ihe best of the We went lo visit Inch the largest bull I ever seen He was featured in the exhibit list yeir a huge beige gentleman with impeccable manners soft brown mascara eyes Unfortunately Inch is no more and we had settle for some of his wives and children irently he had the bad luck to become sterile during the cold Alberta winter last year and a bull without his talent is useless to a firmer There were many more goats than I seen before it the fair a good indication of their growing popularity I always spend a long time In sheep pens and a short time with the pigs admiring the manicured groomed little bodies with their detergent while wool Then I come home to our tally ewes who carry large portions of their feed coming and going in their grey fleece toped Children We were glad to escape the horse ifter Ihrough most of Toronto s youth lounging in the exhibit hall There must have been thousand children on day trips with their batlercd I even siw wee kin dergarleners roped together labelled front and cozing at knees down every aisle The poultry building was a joy and fun to show mother chickens with hats chickens with trousers thickens in total feathery profusion those wilh crowns tufts lopnols p with ruffs boots with cars up ears down and ears between Wcfized iwcdit Toulouse geese and fearsome ind the ugliest I ever seen Mother made some rude ibout him poor fellow The horse palaee is home to me i to tint wilh friends and spend some quiet time with big horses Most exhibitors now protect their iiluible animals drapes and fences which i shame in i but I can understand how they must feel when their horses are constantly upset by noisj youngsters I had a chuckle at the tired primary teicherwhohid shepherded her class la he lee of one of ihe dtmonstr iliun exhibits and sat them down on the floor to their sinii We did not chuckle the who id allowed class to block completely one of Ihe si for the same purpose 1 overheard one girl commenting lo friend round the corner from beef There nothing round I here l Well dead cows or live ones horses pigs sheep in rabbits the Royal have Ihe privilege not Ihe legal right to rebuild a destroyed build the flood plain accord to the Credit Valley Conservation Authority And that privilege means applying to the CVCA for per mission The authority decided to adopt the position lhat each application will be judged on its mcrils Further discuss ions appear lo be open because Ihe CVCA staff is to make recommend and also because Erin Village representative to the authority Evelyn Sullivan Indicated she may take steps to ensure some properly owners gain Ihe right to rebuild Most or Erin s business section and much of Glen Williams and other communities in Ihe Credit Valley arc built on the flood plain I think here should be some assurance that we can rebuild proper direction from the authority O bull van said A stronger position was taken by Acton represent Gail Maltby I feel they property owners do have a right have that building rebuilt she said She continued by saying the authority should give some direction concerning the new structure Maltby agreed with chairman Grant thai the executive deals fairly with people bul iddcd that in establishing policy the authority could in effect il is sorry but may not rebuild Also future executives not be so fair she said The discussion was sparked by a threepage opinion from Toronto lawyer Richard I Winter who strongly suggested that each cation to rebuild in the flood plain be judged on Its own merits Tiklng the opposite posi lion and enshrining Ihe right lo rebuild in the flood plain would be folly according to If we go and say you have the right we get nailed said the chairman If we turned down people wed never hear the end of it continued The other route and 1 don think there Is a middle position wed have everyone build What I feel the authority
