Alice epitome of assinine aplomb at hoof time Groaning sobbing and writhing Alice was having her trimmed by the pathetic display she was putting on an uninitiated bystander would have assumed she waa hiving her legs amputated without anaesthetic However donkeys and horses have their hooves trimmed as regularly and as painlessly as you and I cut our fingernails Vet of all the donkeys I have known not one behaves like a Kent em an when this grooming operation in performed which probably account for the amount of crippled over hoofed donkeys one sees at auction Even the donkeys I raised complete with careful and acted like spoiled brats the minute a pair of hoof nippers came into view Impeccable manners maybe Although Mice Blue has not always lived with us we know her family well and are aware of her impeccable upbringing Alice is a lady in every respect except In the aforementioned arei Small children may ride Alice Blue kittens may round her feet chickens roost on her back and timid strangers may feed her carrots without counting their fingers Alice is the epitome of aplomb when having her hooves cleaned or being given worm pills She has her checked with confidence on everybody pirt and she has unmentionable things done her nether regions without offering complaint BUT approach Alice with a hoof file and she bellows like a banshee I handle the front end while Mack or blacksmith tackles the hooves Both smithies ire cool calm gentle and efficient At no time has any donkey been frightened bullied or punished liar Yet they all think they re going to the electric chair Alice picks up her front foot and leans her solid quarter on weight into the halter and my hands I stroke her nose and coo endearments Into her pinned back ear At the point of over balance with me hanging on so she docsn I tip in the she heaves her body upwards tjking Mick to the ceiling on the end of her hoof a word as hops barn on three legs and Mick admirably coo we pick up scattered tools and star Theatrics is all The performance is repeated with while she rests she treats us to of donkey moans and sobs they do really sob When the job is done by now I schoolteacher firm but Mack has perturbed in a heap bent on telling hi world of her the things I look and requests next to be presented No matter which donkey il is the whole IheitriLil production begins think its just hit I hi have man I have so much to be for 1 served overseas in World War I Upon my return I looked around for a Job I enjoyed the out door environment and Mobility that railroad life offered so I started my career as in 1922 thoroughly enjoyed my regular route from Windsor to Niagara Falls and on to New York At this time my wife Serena and I lived In St Thomas and in 1923 You blessed us with a strong son Emerson One day in 1924 just two years after I began working with the rail road as we were backing around a curve in order to hitch the en lo the tender the coupling mechanism through an error slipped causing the tender to lurch forward and I was pinned between them 1 was almost killed in this accident My back my hips and lower tines were crushed The two brothers who were the engineer and conductor at this route were near at the time They moved the engine forward to free me When hey removed pressure created by both cars the pain I felt was unbearable Thank You God for having the brothers near just when I desperately needed their help They picked me up and having no available medication rushed me to he Chat ham hospital However that short trip in miles on eternity in lime The interna Weeding was so intense that I received three blood transfusions on both my first and second day in the hospital After a two month duration in the hospital they let me go home to completely reco ver Thank You God for saving my life and ling me to return to work once again which I en joyed so much as a brakeman on my regular route Rut I was not well Years later I took several courses to learn Ihe five railroad lines for Chescpeka Ohio Detroit New York and the Canadian Divisions After successfully com these required courses I was promoted from a to a conductor in 1939 My regular route ran from Windsor to New York making numerous stops and I have enjoyed many years together watching our family grow We grew through Emerson wed ding and the blessing of four grandchildren Serena returned home to You In I miss her I understand You leaving me all alone as I was weak and have had such difficulty with my legs since that accident However I have had a rich and rewarding family life career I enjoyed until 1964 when I retired at years of age I hank You for making all his possible for if You had not been there that day in 1924 hese years would never have been possible One day in 1977 when I
