Redmen cop Georgetown tourney to complete successful season Acton Junior flnLshcdoff what could be their finest hour In style on the weekend as they copped Georgetown Rebel Basketball Tourn ament for their fourth tit le of the year Earlier In the week the had put up a fine fight in the Helton High School semi finals falling to M Robinson of Burlington in overtime on the year led by Martin Osso found themselves with a and wonlost record four tournament champion ships a consolation title and in the Hal ton league playoffs for the first time ever Osso has led his team in scoring throughout the season was the top er In the six tournaments in which they competed and was selected to three tourney all star teams including the weekend event in Georgetown Only three of the touma the at tended voted an all star team He also captured the Most Valuable Player Award three times In playoffs the second in Hal ton West met MM Robinson the first placed team from Halton East in Burlington With their backs against the wall the fought hard forcing overtime before falling The Redmen trailed 31 at half time according to coach Rick McArhtur fought back to even the count at at the end of regulation time Martin led the way scoring points while Glen Van added and Ted and Rob Leniiky ten each At the tournament in Georgetown the met and defeated the host Rebels in the opening game of the Osso was again the team leading scorer hitting for points Chris added 11 In their second round match up the more than doubled count on King City 7835 Bob McClure topped In total points for the game with Chris added and Osso 15 In the final the Acton team had little trouble taking Granthcr of St Catherines 41 was back leading the way with poLnts McClure added ten points and six Both Osso and McClure were named to Ihe all- star squad Acton Junior Martin Osso Glen Van Dave Williamson Rob Fiber Ted John Vuk Bob McClure Ken Stephen Sprlngle and Chris Team coach is Rick Mc Arthur WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 28 1979 One Hundred and Fourth Year- No 35 Second Section Last minute marker advances Bantams A Third time Sau It te Marie retains title tops consolation Rob Vermculen goal right to move against with just nine seconds left in regulation time lifted Acton Bantam Firefighters to win over and the Ian brook in Ontario Minor Hockey Assoc iation quarter finals scored the only goal of the first It looks as if Acton Junior Sabres are preparing to make another attempt to catch a Central Ontario League playoff berth For three seasons now the Sabres have fought in attempts to have a successful hockey club on theiceandatthegatc The question I ask Is why should they continue to fight this way and have Georgetown doing the same They should maybe sit down and talk One junior team In Hills maybe could produce a successful team both on the ice and at the gate To start with Acton docs not have talent to produce a winning team without help from outside If you look at this year final standings neither do the Georgetown Gemini The two clubs finished in the last spots in the league Combining the two teams could generate enough talent to challenge teams like Burlington and but In dually I say forget it Both teams will be near the bottom or the league gain next year A Halton Hills team could provide the area fans with good exciting junior hockey and show the people with winning team something essential in this day and age Where would a team such as this play home games at Gordon and the Acton Com m unity Centre Ice time has been a major complaint of both teams over the years Not enough practice time With the team operating out of two arenas it could use one and a half hours practicing in each arena Plenty of time for junior hockey Between the two centres they would still be using less ice time than If they ran individually three hours practice a week and three hours for a home game instead of two hours practice each and three hours game time each week Neither team really wants to give up the fight as an individual franchise But lets face it there just enough talent for two team in them Hills With two arenas to play in the Sabre Gems GemSabres or whatever you want to call them could draw the larger crowds to help pay the bills playing in Acton or Georgetown only once every two weeks you are more likely to draw a larger crowd than if you play every week in one centre Not only would you get local fans in terested fans from the other end of Hills would probably alsomakethetnp The team might have problems at executive level Both sides would have to head Into such an endeavor with the attitude that both Acton Sabres and Georgetown Gemini have folded and It Is a whole new hockey team No playing favorites because a player made the team last year Teams such as Streetsville and Dixie get the use of Toronto players to draw imports Acton and Georgetown only get half way to each other and Milton Georgetown can go half way to Brampton while the Sabres can go to the border Still not much room to find talent Combining the clubs could produce a winner at the gate In the league standings and In Hills Why have two losing liockcy teams when one winner Is Just a merger away frame before Gord McArthur could find the range for Acton with a goal at the second mark of the middle stanza from Tim Evans Flamboro regained the lead a short time later but this time it was Andy Vaivods who evened the count with an unassisted marker Barry Hughes put Flamboro ahead for the third time In the con test before the period ended Mark Duval pulled the of the final frame as he found the net with help from Tim Ferguson and Andy Vaivods took the lead again with to play and it looked as If the Firefighters were going to be forced into playing a fifth and deciding game in but Gord McArthur second goal of the game from Tim Evans and Rob with 3 remain to set up a dramatic finish Rob Vermculen s goal with nine seconds remaining from Mark Duval gave Acton the lead for the first time in the gome and the series victory Coach Steve Marshall was not pleased with the way his team played in the contest commenting that they had been out hustled to the puck and forced into mistakes in their own end Marshall had high praise for Andy after the game saying he played outstanding force becking and working very hard Sault Ste Marie captured their third title in four
