the Town Hall committee to pear before them since the end of December so some policy can be worked out mutually acceptable to both However council s ex have never been realized and they are in the dark about the committees intentions for Acton s old town hall A Toronto daily newspaper ran a story Monday night declaring council was going to decide that night whether to tear the historic building down or go for a facelift However the general committee of council merely filed away the estimates for tearing the building down The future of the building is still undecided The committee told council it has raised about towards restoration of the centuryold edi fice with an appeal for funds be fore Christmas of last year But the impetus for the drive seems to have stalled primarily we pect until citizens know what Hal ton Hills intends to do with the building tear it down or refur it for posterity We have gone on record in these columns for some time as sup porting the committee in tentions to save the building one of the few remaining 19th century buildings of its type in Ontario It is not an architectural master piece but it does portray a page from Actons past It would be a shame if it too went under the wreckers hammer Perhaps if council and the committee got together soon they could iron out the problems to the satisfaction of both Then we could all know whats in the future for the building Bennett monitoring malls announcement that the government will monitor any indiscriminate develop ment of malls to protect the of Ontario municipalities brought a number of queries regarding OMB developments in several areas of the province But Housing Minister Claude Bennett made it that his announcement at Downtown Forum did not mean to imply that the province was prohibiting shopping malls There are for example downtowns restricted by topographic situations where the development of a shopping mall would be of benefit to the community because the downtown cannot expand he said However the minister noted We all realise clearly that indiscriminate development by adjacent municipalities can seriously hurt those who are involved in downtown redevelopment programs and sound planning practices Herald the policy of monitoring is aimed at eases where malls are plunked down in nearby rural areas to feed on urban com munitics thereby adversely affecting existing core commercial operations Where a municipality wants to have malls outside its we would not be con Where municipalities object to parasite malls springing up on their out skirts and threatening downtown cores particularly those where the province is involved with its main street and core sup port programs we step in with our powers under the Planning Act Housing Notes and quotes Don know how Ma Bell can do it but like Mayor Ptter Pomeroy we think Hills should be in one telephone book It a ridiculous situation now where Aeton people must have a Itullon Peel directory to dial Georgetown and vise versa for Georgetown to Acton with Waterloo directory Listings should be in both books But don I blame Bell The didn institute regional govern or preside over the Acton George town marriage Don I think vandalism is serious in Acton ree Press staff hurried out In lake a picture of broken display case glass one day and were asked to appear ogam where the plexiglass replace ment received the same treatment Plain ornery meanness Another resident reported gallons of gas stolen and his truck battery It time for the crackdown police promise in Hilton Hills and for people to get in volved The most patient men you II ever see are the ones who gel paid by the hour Richard J Unlike Acton where Hills council is opposed to a shopping plaza in the east end the council of is committed to supporting proposed mall on the Gateway Plaza in the town west end although three ther developers are eyeing the downtown as the location for enclosed shopping malls Gateway developer Jerry the same man building in Georgetown and proposing to build in Acton nation of the Gateway Plaza location was done by the 77 council and the present council feels they must uphold the decision Meanwhile Collingwood resident Joe has appealed to the Province asking Ihem to overrule the council decision Just the reverse of Architect Lloyd Sankcy told Acton Business Improvement Area members recently that Collingwood saved Its downtown by persuading a large food store and a to locale there in stead of In a peripheral plaza location Collingwood experience proves pressures for plazas don go away and downtown must revitalize and stay up to dale if It Is to attract shoppers Hills planning board says the Acton plaza proposal Is premature In Collingwood the planning board favors a mall at Gateway although the management of Blue Mountain Pottery feels I he development will be detrimental to that business and all businesses in the area Two towns two different stances for one developer We go along with Hills Library Board decision to install a handrail on the bridge approach to Acton Library It can be slippery there in the winter and pedestrians need all the help they can get Acton Club recently Nino for his many yeirs of work with the dub and it richly deserved Mr has been a stalwart of the club and supporter of agricultural pursuits in this and his voice is well known as announcer in the cattle ring at Acton Fall Pair We add our bouquet to the many others Quote from Hob Parker Tory member for former Acton resident The I government has been as organized as a kitten with diarrhea Like your job asks Strathroy Age Dispatch We are reminded of two waitresses we happen lo know One waitress has a very interesting job She frequently gets lo meet civic officials captains of industry and all manner of other in tercsting people The other slings hash is continuously hassled by crabby customers and wishes she could find something else They both work at the same restaurant Citizens of the years i imo Madeleine Gl boons 1 Fourth Estate Education price tag is cheap writer says by What can you buy on Instalment for less than a dollar per day while the use of Ihe purchase Well for one thing your child education man Acton school this year Figures so far show the education tax bill will be far less then on a home assessed at Some folks will of course pay more and others less The increase to last years education price tag amounts to about or slightly less lhan three bottle cases of beer That cheap but won stay that way for long Education is cheap In relation to luxury items because s Board of Educ ation finance committee did its job well and because of increased funding from the rest of Ontario However as the education budgcl the million mark some budget assumptions will be In for exam nation tor sure wages will be contentious point Nearly threequarters of the budget is made up of leather and other staff pay Perhaps one area to take under ration both sides in the negotiations is the gap that is growing between the highest paid and the least paid teachers If the most experienced and highest paid teachers did not get quite so much and the newer teachers a bit more could be some saving by not the entire difference The other major est cutting area would be services Busing in some areas is run under assumptions made years ago There are traditional bus routes With its own busing policy does not have one the board could lest these routes to deter mine if indeed continue to serve their purpose well Building insulation is one item which the is looking at with an eye to saving dollars Separate trustee Len Auger has almost single pushed for a study of school build A few of them are suspected of losinj heat which could be trapped On the revenue side appears to be holding its own The hike here is not loo bad at all And though the percentage f the budget paid for by Ihe province is slightly less this year than before there ire in fact more dollars cents coming into The Board adopted a reasonable position with relation to the Provincial Ministry of Education push for boards to take on new and expensive is resisting the province s demands for mandatory class for emotionally disturbed and other children Those demands say Board should be matched by Provincial dollars The board finance committee has pretty well finely tuned this million budget Keeping its size within the capability of locil taxpayers to manage Is going to lake restructuring taking the budget apart then pulling it back together in different ways to determine if it works as well or betler Thai restructuring will include testinp of each part the assumption that included it in the budget Letters welcome Back issues 10 years ago Token from Ihe Issue of the
