If you looked outside your window over the last couple of days you probably thought it was mid- December and local hockey teams and curlers would be getting ready for playoffs But we are in April and the winners seasons are over The ice in both the Community Centre and Acton Curling Club is gone for the season Sunday curlers pulled the plug while the arena staff threw the switch Monday Looking back on the winter Acton teams and curlers had successful seasons and a few winning teams At the Community Centre we saw the Acton Sabres finish out of the Central Ontario Junior B cellar for the first time after going undefeated In their opening seven games of the schedule We watched as the Acton Bantam Fire fighters battled their way into the All Ontario Bantam semi finals before losing out to the three time Ontario champions from The Acton Hockey Mom minor atoms were also successful on the year reaching zone semifinals before meet ing up with a tough Streetsville team Acton Lions major pee wees were OMHA quarter finalists while the minor pee wees after being upset in Ontario playoffs topped the Waterloo Wellington crown Acton Major Atoms had a few sur prises up their sleeves at tournament time this year as the local team fought hard and earned respect from all local fans for their gutsy performance at the Centennial Atom Tournament The local Novice showed a vast im provement from the beginning of the season to the end and will be a team to watch in the future They like the midgets started slow but improved every time they hit the ice Atom Rotary Minor Bantams had problems winning hockey games over the past couple of years but they turned things around this year and became a contender in league play Acton Legion Minor Hockey also had a good season with many kids enjoying what the league had to offer fun and enjoyment The Legion held a very successful Day of Champions two weeks ago to bring their season to an end Acton Industrial Hockey League had its moments as Blow Press and Family Cleaners battled for first place At the other end there was a battle to the wire to decide the final playoff positions A definite sign of a successful year The other industrial team from Acton the Tigers had a bright spot in their season as well as tangling with the National Hockey League Oldtimers in a charity game before a large crowd at the community centre AH local hockey teams had bright spots in their seasons and they will hopefully have more in every season that follows The curlers had their winning rinks this time around Probably the biggest win for Acton was the zone victory at the Governor Generals tournament in which two Acton rinks combined in total scores to advance to the Ontario semi final matches in Bracebridge The two rinks include Fred Archibald s crew of Bill Cnpps Pete Vidler and Glen Gray while John Minterns troup of Carl Brian Robertson and Keith Hampton made up the other side of the entry The teams went three and zero in the zone competition before meeting the tough competition the event The Archibald rink had another successful in the British Consuls winning three games before bowing out m the final The winners of that competition competed at the inter divisional spiel for the right to represent Ontario at the Briar Many other local rinks spent time in other area curling arenas enjoying the sport and meeting friendly people of other parts of Ontario If they didnt home any silverware and some of them did they can probably still say it was a successful trip They all represented the Acton Curling Club well Its now time to hang up those skates and brooms until next winter season and enjoy the summer months See you next winter at the rinks Streetsville Derbys last night Tuesday advanced to the allOntario
