The Acton Free Press Wednesday Aug With JENNIFER This is be profile of a horse and his owner Not only is this horse a gentlemen of the first degree wellbred kind and credit to his family but he is one of the best all round jumpers this country will ever see Dally Murphy Murph to his friends lives south of under the care and guidance of Ray Skoropad who Imported him from Ireland in 1972 Ray remembers describing to Dr Sam Wilke both men were vets Ray still is the kind of com petition hone he wished to buy large athletic with a good intelligent mind He was told hed not find such a horse In Canada but would have to go to Ireland the home at the Irish hunter Ho did and found Murphy all hands of him Murph was only a broth of a boy then being a mere four year old Now hes a strapping years IShandsartdlSOOIbs The horses name was quite a problem to Ray and was on his mind as he flew to New York to meet the Irish Poplar the ship carrying its precious cargo Being a great admirer or author Brendan Behan and favoring the play Borstal Boy by the same author Ray was delighted to be able to attend a showing of the play In New York Ho decided to name his new horse Borstal Boy However named himself When Ray leapt on deck to greet his big gelding he found plaited In his mane a shipping label stating he was from terms How could you argue with that comments Ray Slow and sure training Dr is a strong believer in the European method of training horses particularly jumpers As a veterinary surgeon he Is well aware that a horse Is far from mature until age five or so mentally or physically Bones arent set knees arent closed and brains arent grown up until several years after most North American horses are broken to saddle With this in mind Ray took the training of the barely saddle broken Murphy very slowly Jumping shouldnt be started until five old says Dr emphatically The larger horse needs longer to develop So many people mist So Ray and got to know other They did a lot of road work played around a lot went to schooling shows and at the age of five Ray start to enter Murph in a few hunter jumper classes lor experience It was then that Rays belief in the big horse started to pay off Murph astounded everyone except himself by winning the prestigious First Year Green Hunter class at Sutton and it was only the third show or his short life From this auspicious start Murph has never look ed back winning class after class in show after show all major ones It would be Impossible to list all credits here but one of the ones Roy remembers with pride lis the time Murph came second In the largest J Canadian Grand Prix at Papiniere Quebec beating the alltime greatest money winner Idle Dice from In his early days of his career Murph was taken on the Florida circuit the toughest show circuit in the business RayprodlyrcmembersMurphcoming sixth out of an unbelievable class of jumpers and turning around and also coming six th out of the same number of entries in AmateurOwner Working Hunter class Both classes require a totally diff erent type of jumping and very few horses can do both well let alone beat horses to do it How many horses have that kind of mentality inquires Ray Its that kind of jumping mentality that won Murph and Ray the Owner lumper Championship at Samson Farms The Speed Derby in Bromont against top horses and riders in North America a third second and a third in the Grand Prix at Quebec and second in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham recently beating all other top Canadian horses In fact Ray has turned down on offer of for Bally Murphy whom he says is a horse for the simple reason that he and his wife Linda love the horse just like one of the family Ray talks about the special bond between him and Murph an uncanny bond hes never felt before He describes Murph as the perfectall round horse When hes through playing fancy horses on the show circuit comes home to the farm to give the kids rides pull the bob- sled at Christmas canter round with his other equine pats the three longhomed Highland cattle and the numerous dogs an the Skoropad property He never stays a paddock hes constantly jumping out of his paddock and Jumping back in when someone is looking He wanders comfortably about the house yard nosing Lindas flower garden and watching the boys play as if he never was the applauded Jumper who cleared foot nine in the Rochester Puissance He never gets flustered Rays He never dirty If he quits its because he feels hes going to hurt himself or the rider He only quits when it gets dangerous hes saved my many a time Ray Skoropad and Bally Murphy And Skoropad ruefully rubs an injured back thats kept him from showing Murph himself lately Doug Henry well known professional horseman has been showing Murph until Rays back injury subsides Most horses have some difficulty ad justing to new riders but Murph Just runs it through his quick brain and cooperates fully Ray chuckles about the one time he saw Murphy thinking of becoming mischievous Canadas grand old man of jumping Jim Elder took a ride on the big chestnut Murphy though hed take things into his own hands and approach the jumps as he felt he sh ould without listening to his diminutive Once round the paddock the expert Elder the sad dle quietly indicating to who he had aboard and Murph was practically tipping his hat mut tering Yes Sir I could go on for several more columns on Bally Murphy hes one of my favourite horses However we ail have space limitations I reached mine several paragraphs ago Dump closes October 31 Georgetown sanitary land Till site will close October 31 and garbage will be trucked to viUe and Burlington The site will reach capacity in April and Burlington site in July 1980 The closure dates were forecast in a report done by MM Dillon Ltd consulting engineers and planners from contour mapping derived from aerial photographs Councillor Miller claimed the trucking of garbage to or Burlington will mean residents with no nearby dump will dump garbage on township roads He pointed out rural people with no town pickup will not drive the big items of garbage on a trailer to Oakville He suggested a dum ping point central to Acton Milton and Georgetown might be arranged for big items such as chesterfields and refrigerators Ask report on vandalism cost Sheridan enrolment is largest in its history
