end of summer weather which descended on Ont ario Friday afternoon got progressively better as the week end advanced and ensured the success of Action s annual Tall Fair Last year s experience where rain completely wiped out the Sunday program was paramount in directors minds but when the weatherman promised fine sunny days with a bright blue sky they saw plans made last year into one of the best if not the bestFall Fair in Acton Entries in most classes were be expectations Like Topsy the Fair keeps growing and now it seems too small for Prospect Park and its environs There were wall to wall crowds on both Saturday and Sunday and the day night area show always a feature looked forward to drew a capacity audience The parade Saturday was another fine fea Fair directors this year moved the midway across the width of the park infield This seemed to help the flow of traffic which surges from arena to livestock horses and events The midway was a surging mass of children parents and all others who enjoy rides and games of chance hot dogs hamburgers french fries and those sticky pink confections for three days Although attendance figures were not known as this section went to press we are sure they at least parallelled or exceeded that of any other fair in any othe year So to the president and directors of Acton Fall Fair we say a thank you from the people of Acton and area May you be back next year even bigger and better and again have the right of ther events and co operation Ive got a secret As anyone who lives a small town knows it hard to keep anything secret In cities that natural How of communication breaks down Information may never get around unless people make an effort when so many live and work in different worlds And when you get to the biggest organizations of peopleto in ternational corporations and national governments secrecy turns into a fetish Information get around at all It stays in double locked filing cabinets on documents marked Private Confidential and Secret out of bounds to everyone without proper authorization Information that does get out such as press releases or annual reports is caiefully checked by corporate vice presidents and public re lations officers to insure it says nothing more than it should The former federal govern ment s mama for secrecy even kept it from telling an engineer working on defence contracts that his security clearance had been lifted So he didn t know he supposed to see the documents that he was eventually arrested for possessing Some of them he had written himself Others had been sent to him by different departments which had not been informed of his revised status either And cabinet ministers in that same government to give them the benefit of the doubt were apparently kept in the dark about the activities of their own forces Those are extreme examples but they reveal a pervasive pat tern of thinking in which secrecy becomes a basic principle Befoie it was elected the pre sent Canadian government proclaimed the need for a Free It is to be hoped they will not succumb to the malaise of bigness and power and will introduce legislation to cut secrecy down to size For secrecy in the end always works against its owner If you have no secrets to hide you never need fear that they may be discovered and used against you Thanks from Princess Meg Mrs Jayne Telford Group Chairman I
