The Acton Free Press Wednesday Nov 1979 lliMflutnMht for Kinging of Itn lilt irjrnft f lookinj for j cookie Sing in the shower want you Remembrance Day is a we are told It the horrors of war In every Canadian community veterans of both world wars gather with civilians to pay homage to the dead Many of the young generation feel Remembrance Day Is becoming obsolete as World War Two creeps further into history Having spent my first years or life surrounded by bombing in Coventry I just as soon forget the whole thing But one Acton resident who feels Remembrance Day is a very large part of the education of the young Is Billy Middlelon veteran of the war to end all wars World War I At plus years he is emphatic about need to prepare today children for the horrors of a war that may come if they t on guard As a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Acton he has been active in the Remembrance Day ceremonies and displays tie has assisted with the Legion display window in Acton Home Furnishings since its innovation On Sunday last he raised and lowered the flags at the cenotaph ceremonies as he has done for years As one of the five or six vets left in Acton he has a special place at those Remembrance cere monies us go home Billy enlisted in as a green youngster wet behind the ears We were a bunch of young kids he looking at the picture of the battalion They were too smiling youthful faces with close clipped haircuts so optimistic In 1916 he was shipped to France where he did his best to stay alive for two years two months till he got hit with shrapnel and he could be shipped home with JENNIFER November 11 I remember Day was yean old and Union Jack flag out of the I hot told the res end booms would now be i He could sleep in our Cmen beds for a whole I I have wear scare itn Mouse mask haled Mickey At and Daddv could put the lin warden hail Bui I cr Mv flag had fallen at of the As a signal bounced around from unit to unit he spent time in the 73rd Black Watch the Signal Corps as previous units got shot out from under him 1 he learned he had no ambition for I just wanted them to get this damn war over and us go home The mud was sheer hell in WWI Billy says if it hadn I been for the duckwalks wooden board walks laid through acres or fields soldiers would have been sitting ducks Miles of France farms were lorn to quagmires by shells farmerstrying fields once more were mowed down by thousands of duds Billy shudders when hf remembers the sight or dead horses on the road between and SI Jean But Billy Middlcton a high spirited young fellow with a devilish twinkle in his eye doesn t like Hcwouldrathertalkabouthishobby He s an enthusiastic philatelist and enjoys telling the or Canada through his stamps Stamps are a work of art he contends showing his plate blocks purchased on date of issue from the philatelic bureau at theGucIph city post office Dale of issue stamps sell at face value in plate blocks singles doubles or sheets and escalate in value quite rapidly First Day covers elegant postal displays of each new stamp may be purchased Billy concentrates on Canadian and British stamps because England developed the first postal system in tWOwith the Penny Black now the rarest stamp After retirement from the Acton Customs office in Billy took up stamp collecting because he had to have something besides running to the pub all the time As well as interesting neighborhood in phila It the grandest way for kids to learn his Billy shares many ests with his Helen He seems as busy now as when he was at the customs office or the Aeton station where he was telegraph operator He still active in the Masonic Lodge and is a Past Master He has been treasurer of Trinity United Church for eight ycan and treasurer of the school board Tor years Such was his contribution lo Acton his home town for 51 years He was voted Citizen of the ear In I91 Remembrance Day is a time to remember those who died to serve their country those like Billy who came home to serve the rest of their lives Chamber Happenings denies plan ICG appeals pro uncial cabinet is to consider Ihe appeal from the Inter ested Citizens Group next Wednesday during
