committing some of his great finds humorous cases and fascinating wild goose to piper in the form of i new book in conjunction with Hon The resident who has more in tercsts than most people is squeezing time out of his very busy life to the book at the same time to develop a radio column on finds Man of many faces Hugh is a fascinating min mixture of Mowat and Grizzly Adams the beard helps with i twinkling sense of humor and an over developed sense of history He even lives in a log house he built himself surrounded by fur canoes and pioneer nostalgia Visiting him is Inking a back in time Hugh life sounds 1 i three circus In fict he used to be part of one and a drummer for J hypnotist and a mate on i imong other things However throughout his lit s been interested in history and old pipers 1963 he is living in the lower Villey and president of loci historic society in Glengarry County in the Dominion provincial archives lit wis neither organization had field workers going out had become a clerk at the the newspipcr sett on field work time Within six months the were indeed con they needed Hugh out on the road full time He been pulling in hisloncil documents papers and rate land deeds fnmllj papers diaries newspipers tape recording church and school records political pipers business and society records all documenting our Family bibles cancelled cheques and land deeds in them He considers his greatest find a collection of letters from John to wife was first Lieutenant Governor of Ontario The chase for those letters took Hugh from the Georgian Historical Society near button where he was speaking one night to Peterborough to Northumberland County where he paid a New farmer for Simcoc letters plus mnteriil of John Robertson In some cases the archives art willing to pay for a real find but the acquisition budget is small and in most cases Hugh persuades the owner the documents arc much safer in the archives A donating receives a bound copy of their papers a tax receipt so they don However valuable historical papers are much better off in the controlled humidity dust free icidily controlled fire proof containers of the 11 storey stone archives building thin in the desk drawer miles finds Hugh travels mostly by car sometimes by air about to Jo miles per year following leads nosing out information He has a large file book filled with mimes 3 of them contacts all across Ont ino with an interest in preserving history Its this network of contacts that helps Hugh gather to items a year and an average of three to four major collections in a yeir To acquire those pieces Hugh follows upwards of lends One thing leads to another and he often finds himself off on tangent following the trait of somelhlnf much more exciting thin the original lead Not only does Hugh pursue history but he really MurJLl and four nearly grown youngsters In a hillside piece en piece log house built from four old barns dating back to 1820 Hugh and some friends have recharted the North West Company after Hugh discovered one of his ancestors was a partner in tht old trading company He builds fur trade and reconstructs historicil fur trade trips canoeing hundreds of miles on the routes pioneers did Acton High School is the first high school to own two fur trade built by under guidance Hugh Is steeped in history and has been called a pioneer in his
