The Acton Free Press Wednesday Feb 9 by Janel Fleming With the increase in our membership as dis played by the well attended Annual General Meeting on January the Acton Chamber or Commerce now a broader base of re presentation from the community and its four sectors private retail industrial and professional groups Plans are already under way for the formation of an Industrial Com mittee and a Professional Committee to give these groups a chance to work together as im portant sections within the community We also hope to organize a President a Club which will provide a liaison for the various groups in town as they plan their goals and activities for the year You have probably noticed earlier in the Act on Free Press that the Acton High School is host ing a visiting band from Edmonton from Feb ruary to February Dave Sale of the High School and Dave Whiting of the Chamber are working together closely to organize a warm welcome for these students We ask that you the public help make the students feel the friend liness of our town during their visit Early this spring we plan a much needed re novation of the Chamber Bulletin Board A new idea for coordinating community activities as suggested by a Chamber member wilt be init with the hope of providing a convenient and organized method of events planning for all of the area groups and clubs Look to the Free Press for more on this as spring approaches The Citizen of the Year evening is sche duled for April mark your calendar now Further information and will appear in a few weeks The Map and Directory for the Acton There are other plans for new projects as well as the continuation and ex pansion of our regular activities It is the sincere hope of the Chamber that general membership and the community as a whole will follow through on its early enthusiasm with new ideas comments and criticism The new decade pro mises many important changes and decisions for the Acton area We hope to see support and in to rest in the town as more individuals and groups become actively involved The school beat by Janet Howe Last Wednesday Dr came to visit us at Acton High Capp is now dealing in medicine here in Canada but hopes to soon pract ice his profession in Cambodia A film was presented called The Silent Death of Cam Year Zero The film was very moving and even a little up setting for some at Acton High Seeing children dy ing from starvation made us aware of how fort we are This gave us the idea of raising money within the school to send to Cambodia We have participated in theTen Days for World Development by selling carnations The Student Association was selling carnations all last week to students and staff The idea was to buy a earn and send it to someone else in the school The carnations will be delivered to dents and staff on Vol entincs Day All the money raised will go to those in Cambodia Something extra that someone took into their own hands to do was to raise money and send four dozen carnations to the Old Age Home in Acton for Valentines Day Acton High band mem ore looking forward to welcoming a number of students from an Ed band The vis itors will be billeted with Acton band members During their one week stay they will be touring with Acton High band outside of Acton and playing concerts in Tor onto and Kitchener area The members of the Acton band will be going to Edmonton in late May and billeted with families there This week is once again Spirit Week Monday was known as Greaser Day This day has now seemed to become on annual thing day was hug a bug red and
