2 Tho Acton Free Press Wodnesday May14 1980 PB0IFDILI1 with JENNIFER This week Is Shield Appeal week and the Salvation Army is well represented in Acton Since last fall the Aeton and Hills minis try has been handled by Lieutenants and Barbara a married couple who are both ordained ministers in the Salvation Army Before their to Acton from Newfound land the Salvation Army had no representation in Hills Tho small Salvation Army Hon of IS worshipped with the band 1 primarily a pastor soys but here Im taken up social work Our program is unique he goes on my wife is part of the ministry and we have a pastoral charge as well as social work to do two people the same concerns work a lot better At the moment the Salvation Army have a church but are hoping to build one soon Currently Sunday night services are held at United Church with Sunday school taking place at the The group tries to meet wice on Sundays and one other weekly evening The Salvation Army office is currently the new home on Norman Avenue pur chased by the Salvation Army as headquarters Lome finds people will go to the newly opened Thrift Store on Elgin Street to contact him when in need However he can wait until he has a church and office for coordinating his multitude of activities Although the serve the whole of Hal ton Hills including Georgetown and Acton they both love living in Acton and say they have found nothing but goodwill and help from the ion and existing clergy Both from Army families Barbara was raised in the Salvation Army by an actively Salvationist mother She spent her youth as a junior soldier and a bands worn an Be fore answered call to the ministry she worked as a telephone operator and a postal clerk in her native Newfoundland Finding her work she entered training college at the Salvation army ministerial college at St John Newfoundland In order to be ordained a Salvation Army ister must take courses before training two years of training and correspondence courses in extensive bible study after college Were obligated to keep learning soys Barbara Barbara was ordained In 1976 Lome a year later and they married shortly after Lome felt the call when he was It years old at a music camp meeting in Newfoundland With a Salvation Army background Lome came up the band as a young lad and graduated high school In He worked in an Ice cream factory trying to ignore his call He wasnt happy and found his life without direction until ho also enrolled In the St Johns training school A Salvation Army officer has to marry another officer Theyre very strict with officers remarks Lome and Barbara find their teamwork valu able and assist each other with Lome doing as much of the housework and child care as Bar bara does ministry work Elizabeth 18 months old goes with her parents everywhere shes got a lot of mileage on her Hundred year history The Solvation Army was founded In 1B87 in England by William Booth an ordained Meth minister He and his wife Catherine the Army when assistance was needed to aid the destitute and the alcoholics of London slums Catherine Booth was one of the first wo men to work alongside her husband in a is try The Army takes a military form to distinguish it from regular churches and is listed as a char itable organization with the government The Army represents soldiers of Chnst fighting for salvation to win over the siege of evil Lome ex plains Were past tho age of passive activity we must fight to win we sec Jesus as a fighter He was not a passive man we sec him as a sold the apostle Paul said put on the armour of faith In the nearly years the Salvation Army has been in operation they have become known for their work among alcoholics unwed mothers destitute people and the needy of all walks of life Down can always find a free meal and a Christmas dinner at the Salvation Army or a bed for the night at an Army hostel A relative ly new service for the Army is a service for fire victims coordinated with fire departments to as people temporarily homeless and without possessions On any given night in Acton youll see Lieutenant Pritchett dressed in his battle dress walking through the hotels being there in case Im needed Our greatest weapon against evil is love allyouneedlsiovc Lieutenants Lome and Barbara of the Salvation Army and their da tighter Lack of support for kill region petition The citizens of Acton and area have been a big appointment to a man who Is trying to kill regional government and he plans to visit here this month to blast residents for their apathy Mike a resident is collecting letters of protest and petition signatures against regional government and once he has hell go to Premier William Davis and demand all regional governments In the province be dis mantled Hes even threatened legal action a class action suit if the province refuses o act on his de mands thought hed get lots of support from Acton and North Nassagaweya residents an Senior apts Continued from page this is normal with these projects and she expects there will be a rush of seniors wanting to be added to the list once the building is opened Both Ms Gabriel and offered assurances for seniors worried about leases and rents where they now live She said people can keep living where they are now on a month to month basis and dont have to sign leases Wont face double rents People wont face double rents either If a person has to remain where they are living now past their move in date their apartment on Elizabeth Drive will be held until they can move in Or if a person has paid rent and wants to move to the seniors apartment building as soon as possible as long as they have a receipt for rent paid elsewhere their rent on Elizabeth Drive will be waived Notice dates to landlords can be coordinated with move in dates That information came from both Reed and Ms Gabriel Shortly after Halton Housing Authority takes over the building an open house will be held for seniors so they can see the apartments and discuss rents and leases People will to move In not long after Noting many are concerned about Ian dlord tenant matters such as leases and rent Reed said his office Is available to help seniors can be reached at and messages left with the answering service will be answered Reed a landlord must give a tenant days nollce while a tenant must only give days notice understandable assumption since a group here for Action collected a signature petition and prepared an impressive brief for Queens Park asking the town be allowed to leave Halton and Hills just a few years ago The plea to theprovlnce fell on deaf ears After two months and his supporters have collected signatures on petitions and about letters No petitions are being circulated In Acton as far as or this newspaper knows although he re ports he has sent four or five to people here and more to rural addresses says he has to letters from Acton and area They are disillusioned is explanation for the reason none of his petitions are being a led here Petitions are being circulated in Georgetown while both Milton and have asked the province to let them out of Halton The politicians are counting on peoples apathy declared He soys people here have decided what the use in fighting the province any longer over regional government Speaking of the response hes receivr d so far from Aeton and other areas where there is regional government Majic said this is peanuts nothing People are so apathetic it hurts It sing Its cheaper to pay these soaring taxes than to circulate the petition Majic says hes not disillusioned by the slowness of his campaign gelling off the ground especially in Acton where he hoped for a lot of support Me Im not disillusioned Im mad as hell This petition is all for one and one for all Its not for my glory or my ego Ill be In Acton going door to door this month and I wont be polite at the door Im fed up with apathy of people PUMP PROBLEMS Wo to aJf jot and piston pumps Were problems with them receiving the balance of the retroactive pay in June The advance applied to the teach category in the grid amounts to about six percent according to Ness We probably as six per cent
